Friend working in finance talking about suicide

A close friend of mine that works in a FO role is talking about suicide because work is too stressful and they dread the idea of having to come in everyday that they would rather end their life. Is there anything I can do here to help them minus talking? I suggested that they take a medical break and seek professional help but he/she is refusing to seek any help. Given that they are an adult, I can’t force them so was hoping for any advice on how to deal with this situation.

For whatever reason I seem to be the only person that this friend is solely relying on for comfort and support which is very stressful, especially when they are talking about jumping out the window of their high rise. As you all know banking hours suck so it’s been very draining to have to come over to their place daily for the past weeks and comfort her/him, I even had to tell my team a few times that I have to step away for the night to deal with some personal issues but I can’t keep that doing that…

This is serious shit. You are a good friend and a solid support network but this is in the realm of professional intervention. Suicidal ideation is persistent, it's always in the back of mind and fucks with perspective. Look at your friend's frame of mind, they would rather keep working and not seek help while continuing to think about ending their life.

The National Suicide Hotline is a good resource for you as well to understand how you can help your friend.

I had a similar situation with an ex a while ago. What I learnt was that you aren’t a mental health professional so you can’t be the one they go to every time. For example, imagine you see a guy on the side of the road that’s been hit by a car. Sure if you’re not a douchebag you’ll try and stop the bleeding and call an ambulance but what you won’t do is carry out all medical aid yourself. This analogy extends quite well to mental health I believe. If I had a friend who was suffering I would for sure take them for a beer, tell them life is not that bad, gently take the piss out of them (which is normal in my country as a way of helping people laugh at a shitty situation) try to get them to look on the bright side blah blah blah but if it persisted and was clearly not a one off (everyone has a bad day occasionally) then I would absolutely encourage them to seek professional help. Mental illness is like any other illness and should be treated professionally.
