FT at MM vs. Intern at BB
What would you do in the following scenario:
- Go FT with an upper MM
OR - Do a senior year internship with a major BB (think JPM/MS/GS; no guaranteed FT offer, however)
I'm very fortunate to have some heavy connections come through on these offers. Both offers are on the table.
I'm looking forward to reading some thoughts. Thank you!
So you're a senior? Why would you turn down a full-time offer for the possibility of a job offer after an internship? Is there something you're leaving out?
Curious to see if a name like JPM/MS/GS would be worth gunning for given this opportunity vs. playing it safe with the MM.
Take the FT offer. It's not worth the gamble.
Take the FT offer. Don't be silly. If you intern at the BB and do not receive an offer, not only did you miss out on a FT opportunity (the MM offer), but your dream of working in IB is going to face a serious uphill battle because every interviewer will ask if you got that return offer.
FT at MM for sure
Go with FT at the MM. After a couple of years, you can potentially try a lateral transfer or go to an MBA program and end up at a BB. At this point, I don't think there is much sense in chasing something you don't have with the opportunity cost of losing something incredibly valuable that you do.
BB S&T SA or MM IB FT (Originally Posted: 10/16/2016)
Hey everyone, longtime lurker here. I have expiring offers in the next week and I wanted to get some thoughts about my options. I have an offer from a top BB for a S&T internship that historically has over a 90% conversion rate from my school. I also have two FT offers for from MM banks (like STRH, PNC, BB&T etc.), one for Capital Markets, one for IB. If I were to accept the internship I've been working with HR so that I could still graduate on time and fulfill other obligations before I would start FT in June 2018. Potentially, I was considering accepting another full-time position that would start after the internship and then quitting that position once FT started at the BB. I've looked over all the contracts and nothing prohibits doing this. The FT position would be in consulting so very little risk of getting blacklisted by the bank. I understand that it seems silly to do another internship when I have a FT offer but the caliber of the bank and the complexity of the products they offer is a big draw for me. I come from a non-target so I think it would be difficult for me to move from MM IB to BB in the future without an MBA. As far as my interests I'm leaning more towards S&T because I've had two internships with it in the past but I understand how both have their benefits. I never thought I'd be in this position coming from my background so any thoughts are welcome.
It seems like you have a good understanding of what you want. If you're more interested in S&T then working in MM IB with very limited exit ops does not sound appealing. i'd take the BB offer
