FT Recruiting
Hey everyone,
I’m currently a rising senior at a non-target state school with around a 3.7 GPA. I’ve locked in a 2025 SA position at a solid but not top-tier bank (think Wells Fargo, HL, Baird, etc.) in a Tier 2 city like Charlotte or Atlanta. Long-term, I want to be in New York and eventually break into MFPE.
Just trying to get a realistic sense of how feasible it is to lateral into a top BB or EB group in NYC for full-time. I know I’m coming from a state school without brand-name backing, and I’m not in the ideal location for exposure or networking.
I’m trying to figure out how much my current bank and city might hold me back and whether FT recruiting is still open enough to make a move if I play it right. Curious how much networking can move the needle, how people have framed these kinds of lateral moves without burning bridges, and what I should be doing now to position myself.
If anyone has made a similar jump—or even if you just have advice on navigating the process—I’d really appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance.- ChatGPT wrote this for me if it sounds botted

how many alumni do you have in NYC top tier BB/EB?
.
You could also alternatively work at your current bank, get some experience, lateral or try to go to a great MBA. FT spots for top BB/EB at NYC are just very rare. You could ask the HR to move you from CLT/ATL to NYC if thats possible, and then you network from there.
Honestly, probably the non-target nature of the school will hold you back significantly more than the bank you'll be at. But you'll be at a great name-brand place this summer, and during FT recruiting, they'll know you had a legit experience during your summer.
I went from doing SA '24 at a much, much worse balance-sheet bank that barely has an IDB presence (it's really all corp banking), and was able to re-recruit FT to an EB. I did come from a target though, but didn't get much alumni support at all–unfortunately at a school where if you aren't part of the finance clubs it's tough to get alums to respond.
In a similar situation but slightly different. Accepted a FT position in a Tier 2 city with a MM/Balance Sheet bank with the goal to get some skills and deals under me then move internally to the group I want or lateral as an AN1/2. Current group I’m joining isn’t bad/is what the bank is more known for.
Seen a lot of people do it in many different circumstances glad to see you were able to do it
I have talked to some folk who also recruited FT, were you very lowkey about your FT recruiting like reaching out to a total of 20 people? And I assume you kinda went into the mindset I am going to try it out, but if I don’t get it Id be happy with the FT offer. I know lucky does play a role in the whole thing. Would you recommend if I have some friends at like BBs to utilize them if I am at MM this summer?
Smbc?
Hello, I am currently in a similar boat to you. Can I please DM you to ask some questions and guidance? I would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Can I PM or call? I’m in an identical situation currently would love to hear your thoughts if you’re not busy.
Can just ask here since I imagine others might have similar Q's
Depends on if you really care about groups. Honest answer is if you’re willing to go a non-desired group / vertical, you can probably break in with FT or a lateral move.
Requires effort, but it’s done and it’s not impossible
