FT Recruiting

When does FT recruiting for IB start. Im currently a junior interning in IB this summer at NYC. Its a middle market firm but not one of the top ones. Just wondering what FT recruiting looks like as I want to keep my options open and see how I like the firm I’m at currently. Also, is it harder than internship recruiting and how are interviews/networking like?

Full-time (FT) recruiting for investment banking typically starts after summer internships conclude, as banks assess their return offer rates and determine how many additional hires they need. Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Timeline:

    • FT recruiting often kicks off in the weeks immediately following the end of summer internships. For example, one user noted that banks went into a "full-on sprint" during the first and second weeks after return offers were given.
    • Applications for some banks may open as early as mid-July, with others following shortly after. Superdays and interviews can happen quickly, so being prepared is crucial.
  2. Difficulty Compared to Internship Recruiting:

    • FT recruiting is generally considered more challenging than internship recruiting. This is because there are fewer spots available, as many positions are filled by returning interns.
    • Networking becomes even more critical, as you’ll need to stand out and demonstrate why you’re a strong candidate despite the limited openings.
  3. Networking and Interviews:

    • Networking is key. Many successful candidates reach out to associates and VPs via LinkedIn or email, even if they don’t have warm connections. Showing that you know what you want and have proven yourself (e.g., through your current internship) can make a strong impression.
    • Interviews are often similar to those for internships, with a mix of technical and behavioral questions. However, banks may expect a higher level of polish and readiness since you’ve already had internship experience.
  4. Action Plan:

    • Start networking now, even before your internship ends. Being in NYC gives you an advantage for in-person meetings or coffee chats.
    • Prepare for interviews by refining your technical skills and practicing behavioral questions.
    • Keep an eye on application openings and be ready to move quickly once the process begins.

Good luck with your FT recruiting! It’s a competitive process, but with strong networking and preparation, you can position yourself well.
