Why does everyone always suggest Murray Hill?
I heard Battery Park is a good place to live.
What is your budget? Assuming an entry-level budget, to be in the hype or "sceney" areas you'll live in a shoebox. A little better bang for your buck as you move to upper upper east east side (90's and lex for example).
Plus then you can say you live on the UES when you're at B-Bar macking on the interns.
I have a three bedroom 1.5 bathroom duplex on the upper Westside. It is a share but I am renting two of the three rooms. $1,600 per month.
Murray Hill has become a popular spot for young bankers probably because people who haven’t spent time in NYC before think it will be convenient to be able to walk to work... and it’s become a self perpetuating thing..
Once you move to NYC and inevitably embrace the subway, this becomes a non-factor and most people come to see Murray Hill for what it is.. an area of midtown that’s overcrowded and overpriced with a few shitty “intern” bars (Turtle Bay) where 22 year olds like to squeeze groups of 4 dudes into 2 bedroom apartments..
May have to update your intern bar reference, Turtle Bay appears to be dead. Shut down early last summer and they've stopped putting up signs saying that they'll be back soon. Whole flock of 22 and 21 year olds in the city who will never know dollar beer night.
I recently (last month) moved to NYC from Seattle for IB. I can't comment on location is best to live, but I currently live in Bushwick bc it was cheap, and I cannot recommend it. It's very suburban (in a boring way), and the subway to Midtown can become extremely taxing. (Maps claims it’s a 45 minute commute, but having timed it on most days, it’s closer to an hour-fifteen, or even sometimes an hour and half.)
Where about in Bushwick and where do you live now?

Rest easy knowing you're going to move again in a year or two and you'll have a better sense of what areas you like then. So I wouldn't block off places like Hells Kitchen, Fidi or the entirety of midtown if they're a convenient location and decent space. Unless you're on some parental support, you'd live in a shoebox in West Village, Soho and Tribeca. Think you can find some deals in East Village, but beware going too far east because then you get away from all the subway lines. The spots in Chelsea you'll be able to afford will basically be right next to MSG/Penn. Most of your friends and most of the places you'll go out will probably be on the East side out of college FYI. Like the guy above said, it's a self-perpetuating cycle of why everyone moves into LES and Murray Hill/Kips Bay every year.
No experience with Brooklyn or UES/UWS, but Williamsburg seems fun (no idea where the train situation stands).
1st minimize your commute time....where is your office?

i have no idea what that means...i don't follow the bank recruiting calendar...i'm past that stage of my career...but i've lived in NYC for 15 years...worked for 6 BB firms with offices in different parts of the city over those 15 years...and i've lived or spent significant amounts of time n every neighborhood of manhattan during that time.
each BB firm has hundreds of new hires every year across many different business lines...anyway...i'm not asking for the address...just the general vicinity..such as the nearest subway stop...that would help people give you advice.
