Full Time Recruiting - IB

Hi all. Currently a rising senior at a semi target and plan on recruiting for full time. Have done some networking but still feel kind of lost when it comes to this. Background is 2 years as an intern in CorpDev and 1 in PE. Anyone who has gone through a similar process have advice on how to navigate the space? Really appreciate any and all assistance

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can navigate full-time IB recruiting as a rising senior with your background:

  1. Leverage Your Experience:
Your internships in CorpDev and PE are valuable. Highlight the transferable skills you’ve gained, such as financial modeling, deal exposure, and strategic analysis. These are directly relevant to IB roles and will make you stand out.

  2. Network Strategically:

    • Focus on alumni from your semi-target school who are in IB. Use your alumni directory or LinkedIn to identify them.
    • Reach out with personalized messages, referencing your shared background and expressing your interest in IB.
    • Aim for informational calls to learn about their experiences and seek advice. This can often lead to referrals.
  3. Target Boutiques and Middle Market Banks:

    • While larger banks may have more structured recruiting cycles, boutiques and middle-market firms often have more flexibility in their hiring timelines.
    • These firms can provide excellent experience and serve as a stepping stone to larger banks if that’s your goal.
  4. Refine Your Story:

    • Be prepared to explain why you’re transitioning from CorpDev and PE to IB.
    • A strong narrative could be that you’ve enjoyed the deal-making aspects of your previous roles and want to gain broader exposure to transactions and industries, which IB offers.
  5. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Ensure you’re technically sound. Review financial modeling, valuation methods, and accounting concepts.
    • Practice behavioral questions, focusing on your past experiences and how they’ve prepared you for IB.
  6. Stay Persistent:

    • Recruiting can be competitive, but there are plenty of opportunities. As one WSO thread highlights, there are thousands of firms across hedge funds, PE, VC, valuation, and IB. Keep applying and networking.
  7. Consider Timing:

    • Some firms may still be hiring for full-time roles even after the main recruiting season. Keep an eye on job boards and stay in touch with your network for any late openings.

Your background already positions you well for IB. With focused networking, a clear narrative, and strong preparation, you can navigate the space effectively. Good luck!
