Furnishing New Apartment

Hi all, I am moving to a new city soon and am considering what quality of furniture to get for my new apartment. For context, I have had fairly mediocre furniture (~$500 couch when bought new for example) for the start of my career so far (all of which I will be selling or throwing out) but feel that now may be a good time to get nicer furniture that I will keep for an extended period of time. If people have recommendations for furniture or any tips for furnishing an apartment in general, that would be extremely helpful, thanks!

Making big bucks dabble in the top two - feel like that’s when you’re hiring a designer to do your home fully custom

Can make a place look nice with all from 5

Rugs can get really expensive quickly and I feel that’s a whole different conversation, but a nice rug can go lots of places with you

* list not exhaustive by any means whatsoever

Thanks for this, very helpful insight. Looking at mainly West Elm/CB2 for tables, bed frame, nightstand etc. May splurge a bit more on the couch/living room chair (Natuzzi).

Congrats on the new move! When I finally decided to upgrade from my basic Ikea stuff, it made a huge difference just picking a few quality pieces like a solid sofa and a nice accent chair. Instead of rushing, I spread out my purchases and looked for pieces that brought a bit of style but seemed like they’d last a while. If you’re open to it, start with the main furniture for your most-used rooms, then add decor and smaller things over time. Mixing a couple premium items with more affordable basics can actually work really well and keeps your place feeling unique.

If your new place has a balcony or even a bit of outdoor space, adding lounge chairs was what helped me actually use it and feel at home. There’s lots of inspiration online if you want modern options.

I’d probably focus on buying a few really solid pieces instead of trying to upgrade everything at once. A good couch, mattress, and desk/chair setup make the biggest difference day to day. Also don’t rush it just to fill the apartment fast, living in the space for a bit helps you figure out what you actually need. Facebook Marketplace and local estate sales can honestly get you way nicer furniture for the same price as brand new mid-tier stuff.
