Goldman - Education Technology & (Knowledge) Services - Victor Hu MD - Any info?

Does anyone have any information on this "group"? If you google Goldman Education Technology & Services, Victor Hu comes up. Using LinkedIn searches, nobody else (except 1 other fishy result) seems to be part of that group other than Victor Hu.

I'm potentially looking at places where I can be on the advisory side of deals and not just issuing debt / doing public finance work so I would appreciate any info on this education sector coverage group.

Specifically it would be good to know if you can be hired to work under Victor Hu and work on education deals only.

Hey Making Gravy, I'm the WSO Monkey Bot and I'm here since nobody responded to your thread! Bummer...could just be time of day or unlucky (or the question/topci is too vague or too specific). Maybe one of these topics will help:

More suggestions...

Hope that helps.

I never met him and haven't heard anyone mention the practice (and I've looked at a decent amount of edtech stuff), but his bio on the firm's website says he is based in the SF office and was previously BUM (Goldman term for staffer) for the West Region group which years ago was effectively co-headquartered between LA and SF.

TMT had a well-established sub-cell in the SF office, but overall the West Region group was kind of just several dozen guys who did various different stuff as needed. There are obviously guys who do more of certain stuff than others (for instance, I am marginally acquainted with one guy who's rising quickly [and something of a young gunner who'll probably be one of those quick-to-partner guys] who straddles FIG and TMT really well to cover west coast fintech, for instance).

My read from how the group is described is that Victor is the firm's coverage lead for edtech, and whenever dealflow arises, people out of the technology group get staffed on it. In practice, this inevitably means at least one associate and one analyst get tagged as the 'edtech guys' and the BUM always plugs them into those deals as they come in. If that someone is too committed with active staffings, someone else gets it (and they may over time assume that informal title themselves or be co-opted into it).

It isn't something that needs to get broken out as a full-fledged group on its own, but the increasing investment and M&A activity in the sector necessitates some specialized coverage at the senior level.

Think of it like any other emerging vertical inside an established industry. JPM, for instance, has done fairly well carving out a niche with subscription consumer businesses inside the CRG group. They did Dollar Shave Club (and even made a fancy https://youtu.be/b935avWPYGU</a">Youtube vid to really wow us Millennials), for instance, and are making headway with advisory relationships (most of which are not yet fee-generating) with some of the large late-stage venture-backed unicorns.

It's a simple formula: [senior coverage guy] at Firm for [emerging vertical].

In this case it happens to be this guy Victor at Goldman for edtech.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
