Goldman Sachs "Neurodiversity Hiring Initiative"

Has anyone heard of this?

I'm not going to lie, I thought it was satire when it first came up on my LinkedIn. How do we feel about having a special recruitment initiative for those that identify as "neurodiverse".

"For those unfamiliar with neurodiversity, it includes stuttering, ADHD, dyscalculia, dyslexia, autism and many other brain differences."

How do we feel about this. Is it a good look? Or is it a total reach and pointlessly thinking up new ways to caricaturize people, based on their ancillary traits, as "diverse" so they can make their team look more well-rounded and ESG?

This is going to be the most abused hiring initiative in history. My completely unsubstantiated assumption is that maybe 1 out of 10 of "neurodiverse" candidates will have a clinically validated diagnosis. 5 out of 10 will probably be self-diagnoses who are convinced they have depression, anxiety, adhd, autism and dslexia because they failed a math test once. The other 4 out of 10 candidates will just be dudes who realize there's no way to verify whether or not somebody is mentally retarded so they will lie about it.

What other groups ought we offer specific hiring initiatives for in addition to the mentally retarded? Sex offenders? Violent felons? People who wait to count their change until AFTER it's their turn at the cash register?

Does Goldman have an Identity Politics department in their corporate HQ that exclusively focuses on how many different ways they can segregate and divide their employees based upon caricaturizing ancillary personal traits, ethnicity and brain function? Seems like that's their most active group this year...

Touch grass. If you can't understand the difference between someone with autism and a sex offender, you need to get help. People like you are pathetic.

A) This is only for back office positions.

B) most programs for those with disabilities require medical verification.

Most successful people in business and technical fields are often highly intelligent neurodivergent people who are well adjusted.

Just to give examples m, Elon Musk and Bill Gross have Asperger’s. Bill gates is rumored to be as well and is probably likely to be in the spectrum given his behaviors. Richard Branson and Charles Schwab are dyslexic.

Silicon Valley is basically built by neurodivergent people. But you don’t have to go far to find a bunch of neurodivergent people - just find any quant at a prop shop or a HF and odds are they’re on the spectrum of some sort but just really well adjusted.

Well that was one reason I found it weird. The incidence of Autism in high finance is definitely higher than it was in my undergrad b-school classes. Sort of like doing diversity recruitment for Jews at a Big Law firm.

Edit: I have absolutely no data to back up the above claim and it could be wrong as fuck. Don't come for me, I'm IQ-divergent.

Maybe it’s for not so highly intelligent neurodiverse people.

To be fair, highly intelligent neurodiverse people (who are often well adjusted) are just seen as eccentrics. (So they often go undiagnosed) Neurodivergent people who aren’t highly intelligent are often diagnosed and discriminated against because of their ”out-of-norm” behavior.

People in finance with Asperger's/ASD (* solely speaking for those formally diagnosed with it, there are a shockingly high amount of incorrect self-diagnoses) have to fight extremely hard for what they have. It complicates your personal and professional life, especially given that this career field requires strong people skills (at higher levels at least). This is obviously not a one-to-one comparison, but firms recruit individuals with disabilities for a similar reason why they recruit veterans - their differentiated lived experience allows them to think differently and those which break in are exceptionally dedicated and driven.

Whether it's being part of the E4 mafia or having Asperger's, there are legitimate reasons why you want these people at your banks. *E4 mafia is a US armed forces joke

Great thing.  For some of these people, getting a job can change their life, give them purpose, and help their self esteem.

This is diversity hiring I support.  Better than force hiring white girls from rich north eastern families and upper middle class Latinos that look white AF into IB groups with HR enforced easy interview processes.
