Good idea or ruin my chances?

So I had an interview with an analyst and MD, and they are part of a regional MS team of 8 senior people. Think Houston O&G. I know that in the end, this will certainly be based on fit.

I feel like I did well in the phone interview, but there are a couple issues. Specifically, this is for a 1st year analyst and I have ~1.5 years of FT research and corp fin experience.

At the end of the call, the 3rd year analyst said “feel free to reach out if you have any questions on what it is like being an analyst, I have done it here and in NY so I could be a good resource” and then made sure to give out contact info.

They are not moving forward for a couple weeks. I am thinking about writing an email saying something like “Thank you again for the interview, I always like to network and build contacts in the industry, would you be willing to set an informational interview to discuss banking in your industry and life as an analyst.”

The idea being, this would set me apart, and I could preach an interest in IB.

Should I let well enough be and hope for an invite back or take this back-end technique? I have had informational interviews before and they are generally very successful.

FYI, I am from a true non-target—think Arizona State—so I imagine I am at a disadvantage to the competition from that too.

I don't think you have to mention "I always like to network and build contacts". That part is crap. People don't want to hear that. Yes, do it.
