Good/bad idea to live with other interns in same group?

Do you guys think it's a bad idea to live with other interns if you're working in the same group at the same bank? This is for a regional office so it isn't that big.

On one hand, we can carpool and share expenses. On the other hand, we're going to be competing for full-time offers so I'm not sure if this is such a great idea. I've never met the other guy either.

Thanks in advance.

try to feel the guy out a bit. ive found in finance there are generally two types of people - cool guys who are able to seperate work from play and that are normal, and overachieving nerds who live sleep and breathe the job..if you get a sense he is in the former camp, it should be fine, but avoid if he may be in the latter

Also might want to be taking into account that you'd then be seeing him literally every hour you're awake. Even if you get along pretty well that's a lot of time haha. Interesting situation.

I think it's best to live with someone from a different bank. That way you get to live with someone that understands your lifestyle, and you can have bitch sessions after a long night at the office (very therapeutic, trust me). You can widen the scope of your network and get a feel for "the lay of the land". Banks are generally located close together so you may be able to carpool as well.

Competition this time around will be pretty fierce, I think there is more downside potential than upside to the whole situation you are proposing, honestly.

So you guys suggest living with someone from a different bank. What about with a friend who goes to college in the area but isn't interning? Based on your experience, what would provide for a better living situation?

the friend... you already know whether or not you get along

A) Friend who lives in the area Pros: Already know them Cons: Can't bitch to them because they don't really understand IBanking

B) Person who interns at different bank Pros: Understand each other - very therapeutic to bitch about stuff Cons: Don't know them, could turn out to be douchebag/plays music really loud/hard to live with/etc.

For those of you who have been SA's before, which one makes your summer more enjoyable?

Living with another intern is like living with your gf

you get sex = you get to carpool, more convenience

you get annoyed as *** by your gf because girls are mostly drama = you get annoyed by your fellow intern ( which you are not even sure if he's cool or not) because you spend so much time with him

what happens if the "relationship " doesnt work out?

-> you guys are still living the same roof and hate each other

Therefore, I suggest you do not live with your fellow intern or your gf for that matter

my bad, worded it wrong

living with your gf = easier to have sex instead of going to her house / finding other girls

living with the intern = easier to carpool and all other stuff.

but whatever, my point is to not live with your felow intern

Remember, you never really know a person until you live with them. That said, here are some real solid words of advice:

MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR ROOMATES, DON'T BECOME ROOMATES WITH YOUR FRIENDS!

Only exception is if you have already lived with that friend; always an exception to the rules after all. That said, room with a fellow intern even if they are a complete stranger (I'd agree, preferably not someone you're going to be working with all day). You learn to live and deal with a new situation and people regardless of whether you like them or not (always a good skill to build) and who knows, you may leave the summer with a new friend. Worst case scenario plays out, it is just a summer after all and one that you'll be spending a lot of time at the office during anyway.

sounds like a bad idea...depending how chill these interns you will be working with are, you might need to still maintain some sense of professionalism outside of the office with them

How about interns from other banks? I know the gut reaction for a lot of you is to live with a friend, but it seems like living with an intern at a different bank has a lot of advantages too. He will understand the hours you're working and you have someone you can bitch to if you're having a bad day. It's also a good way to network since he may get a full-time offer. It's always helpful to have friends at other BB's.

Living with a friend may not be such a good idea because you could ruin your friendship from your living habits. On the flip side, you may have more fun with a friend.

Thoughts?

It really depends on the friend man. I lived with my best friends for a year during college and it took our friendships to the brink - we all ended up regretting it. Your mileage may vary; this is just like the magical "fit" that always comes up in recruiting. If this person is more of an acquaintance, than that is better. Also, consider that this friend will probably have normal expectations of you as a roommate with regards to cleaning, paying the bills, etc. To be honest, I don't think I did any of these once over my summer, but it was cool because my roommate knew what was up. Our place was a mess, but who cares? Finally, it really comes down to what kind of person you are and what kind of person your friend is. If you like to party, than having a college roommate will help out your social life. If you are very focused, having a banker roommate can keep you on track.

Anyways, it shouldn't be too difficult of a decision, just go with whatever feels right.

Dude, if you live with your friend I doubt it'll get to that point. The only reason shit can hit the fan when living with a friend is because you spend SO much time with each other that every little thing he does or doesn't do around the place pisses you off. You're going to be working your ass off, and it's likely that during the week you'll see him for 20 minutes in the morning and he'll be in bed when you get home (or you'll want to go to bed immediately). On the weekends, you'll drink with him and screw around Saturday and Sunday - exactly what you do already. I doubt it would cause too much trouble.

And do you really want to spend a Saturday drinking with a kid talking about banking all day? Doubt it. At least your friend is a known quantity; who knows what kind of freak you'll get if you room with an intern.

I find that most people who get internships at BB's tend to be pretty fun people too. Competition for IBD SA positions is so tight that the people who get offers are not only technically sound, but very well-rounded as well.

Aren't you going to be an SA this coming summer? So how exactly would you know what they're like?

In all honesty, do what you feel comfortable with. I would never live with someone I've never met before - there are some weird people out there, and just because someone was able to land a gig as an SA does not mean they will be someone you like outside of work. But if you're comfortable with it, go for it.

I lived with a kid who interned at an energy hedge fund this summer...i would say that it was nice having someone totally away from the office to talk to, but it sucked holding long hours when he was done at 5pm everyday. Granted, you won't really be around the place much if your working long hours, just make sure they respect your space and all - you should be good. I could have gotten really unlucky and landed a total weirdo also - I would go with your friend. Not worth an entire summer being miserable.
