Based on the most helpful WSO content, GPA continues to play a significant role even after securing an IB SA offer, especially when planning to recruit for buyside roles like private equity or hedge funds. Here's what you need to know:

  1. GPA as a Screening Tool: For buyside recruiting, GPA is often used as an initial filter during the resume screening process. A strong GPA (3.8+) can help you stand out, especially when competing for top-tier opportunities.

  2. 3.8+ Considered the Same?: While a 3.8+ GPA is generally viewed favorably and may not differentiate much beyond that threshold, anything below a 3.8 could require you to compensate with other strengths, such as networking, deal experience, or technical skills.

  3. Long-Term Impact: GPA also matters for MBA applications and post-MBA roles. Candidates with higher GPAs often have an edge when applying to top business schools or prestigious post-MBA positions.

  4. Effort Beyond GPA: If your GPA is below the ideal range, you’ll need to focus on building strong relationships with headhunters, networking with alumni, and excelling in your IB stint to showcase your value beyond academics.

In summary, while your GPA may matter less once you’ve established a strong track record in banking, it still holds weight for buyside recruiting and future career milestones.

I guess my real question is: once you’re already above a certain GPA threshold, is it better to genuinely challenge yourself and learn more, even if it means a 3.8x instead of say a 3.9x?

really, wow. have heard of upperclassmen at top banks, top groups etc. having low 3.8s or even as far as rounding to a 3.8, and still getting MF looks now for on cycle. I guess the higher the better, but won’t be the reason you do or don’t get the job.

Really depends. It never goes away but becomes less important as you do cooler things
