GS IB internship Experience

Hi hi! So basically I just signed GS for IB summer 2027. Nervous and looking for a previous interns POV on some of the GS classic groups (NRG / Industrials / Healthcare):
1. How would you describe the culture overall and in the groups?
2. Any formal capstone/intern project or presentation? If yes, what should I expect?
3. What drives return offers (staffing, feedback, mid-summer evals, etc.) and what’s a typical return offer rate per group? Is it possible to take everyone in a group that deserves it? Is one of the classic groups more likely to offer returns to their group over another?

Tbh any pro-tips or insights on doing my absolute best would be appreciated. FYI this is my first IB internship

Congratulations on landing the GS IB summer internship for 2027! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

1. Culture in GS Classic Groups (NRG / Industrials / Healthcare):

  • Overall Culture: GS is known for its competitive yet collaborative environment. The culture can vary slightly between groups, but generally, you’ll find a high-performance atmosphere where interns are expected to be proactive, detail-oriented, and adaptable.
  • Group-Specific Culture: While there isn’t specific data on NRG, Industrials, or Healthcare in the context provided, classic groups at GS often have strong mentorship structures and a focus on technical excellence. Networking within your group and building relationships with analysts and associates will be key.

2. Capstone/Intern Project or Presentation:

  • Some banks, including GS, have been known to include formal projects or presentations as part of their internship programs. These projects are often designed to test your ability to analyze data, create presentations, and communicate effectively.
  • What to Expect: If there’s a capstone project, it might involve working on a mock deal, creating a pitchbook, or presenting a strategic recommendation. Be prepared to showcase your technical skills, attention to detail, and ability to think critically.

3. Return Offers:

  • What Drives Return Offers: Return offers at GS are influenced by several factors:
    • Staffing and Feedback: Your performance on assigned tasks and feedback from team members are critical.
    • Mid-Summer Evaluations: Some groups conduct formal mid-summer reviews to provide feedback and assess your progress.
    • Cultural Fit: Demonstrating a strong work ethic, being a team player, and fitting into the group’s culture are essential.
  • Typical Return Offer Rates: Return offer rates can vary significantly by year and group. Historically, GS has had return offer rates ranging from 40% to 90%, depending on the economy, group performance, and intern class size. For example, in some years, groups have taken 2 out of 6 interns, while in others, they’ve aimed to retain as many strong performers as possible.
  • Group-Specific Likelihood: There’s no explicit data suggesting one classic group is more likely to offer returns than another. However, larger groups with more deal flow may have slightly higher capacity to extend offers.

Pro-Tips for Success:

  • Be Proactive: Take initiative in asking for work and seeking feedback. Show that you’re eager to learn and contribute.
  • Attention to Detail: Double-check your work for accuracy and formatting. Small mistakes can leave a big impression.
  • Build Relationships: Network with your team and other interns. Strong relationships can lead to better feedback and mentorship.
  • Stay Organized: Manage your time effectively, especially if you’re juggling multiple tasks or projects.
  • Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask clarifying questions when needed. It’s better to ask upfront than to make avoidable mistakes.

Good luck with your internship! Remember, the key is to stay focused, work hard, and make a positive impression. You’ve got this!

Honestly all this depends on the group, each group has a different final project, some groups have you do the project solo vs others will group you up. Project could be a regular simulated m&a transaction or a fairness opinion.

As for ROs, not much to worry about aside from yourself, in my experience, they definitely factor in your progression. It’s been a couple years since i interned but when i started i was an awful intern, (my work quality was pretty bad, pretty sure some people complained about me at the start lol), definitely would have been ranked towards the bottom of the class. But I worked my ass off and sentiment around changed towards in the second half of the internship. Got a RO and my efforts to improve were acknowledged in my final review.
