Hardos in group
Context - in a EB in UK. Group is chill - never worked past 11pm for most ppl in office, then 1am working from home.
BUT theres one hardo associate that CONSTANTLY gives me work that takes 2x the time he allots me to do, chasing and asking "WHEN CAN YOU DELIVER" every fucking minute, assigns work at friday 9pm, etc. Fucking annoying piece of shit as i am now going to work both saturday and sunday thanks to you fucking fucker piece of fucking shit
rant over i just generally hate in banking , on top of working the hours you are also expected to be available 24/7 which means you have 0 downtime even in holidays / weekends. oh also in my bank theres no protected hours / weekends and i am legit thinking about quitting now . fucking shit industry
Hardos in your group are the worst, especially when they are the ones assigning work.
Thats tough man, push through it.
Come over to the product side, brother.
How respected is this hardo in the team versus you? If he's bottom bucket and you're at the top, you'll be surprised at how much those above him will swing for you versus him. I'd gladly can one of our low / mid tier associates if it'll retain a star analyst. Totaly depends on group culture but at my shop (and I think most banks) we wouldn't stand for pointless or unreasonable behaviour (assumng you aren't exaggerating, that's what this is) - speak to your staffer, or team head.
There is a deeper point to this though - as a VP, as an MD, as any senior role, you're absolutely on call 24/7. The upside is that this is usually more hands-off (e.g. a phone call rather than being dragged into the office all weekend), but this lack of control (A) sucks big time, and (B) is one (key) reason we're paid outrageously high amounts
I am new to the team so dont know much about people's views and politics. And i am afraid that if i bring up this to the staffer / vp (working in weekends for some hours) then they would just label me as lazy.
Being on call is fine if the work is quick and impactful. But needing to watch ur outlook 24/7 so you can change the font size by 0.5 and remove oxford commas, expecting you to give in immediately is fucking retarded. I know a lot of you grinded / are grinding through it but I just dont see the point of it.
Would definitely check in if other analysts are receiving similar treatment from said associate. As a poster above said, if you’re a top analyst and they’re mediocre/bad, seniors are more inclined to keep the top analyst(s) to prevent them from leaving because of one associate that’s just badly organised and unnecessarily demanding. Have seen it play out in my own team and other banks also, where one analyst brings it up to their LM/staffer, who will go on to speak to the other analysts and if all say they have similar experiences, that associate will be spoken to or even pushed out.
He’s an associate lol, you know you can ignore him sometimes. What’s he gonna do? Cry to the VP who doesn’t care?
You need to address the situation asap in some way.
Is the person writing and chasing over teams? Go see them in person / call them. Bunch of losers hide behind their screens but don’t dare to have an attitude in person.
If they give ridiculous deadlines? Tell them this will take me this and this long, and that’s it.
Do they keep chasing like crazy? Tell them to stop
Stand your ground, don’t let them disrespect you
Reality is, people behave how you allow them to behave. This hardo needs to know that they can’t fuck with you. This is not saying they cannot give work etc, but they can be respectful.
