I wouldn't approach it from the "Hi! We went to similar schools, give me a job please!" angle, but would instead take it a step further and realize that if you have similar academic backgrounds, you probably have similarities elsewhere as well. It will take a little more effort, but you can probably find some other way to reach out to these guys if you already have pretty solid common ground to start with.

I would think they'd love it. "Hi, I'm from Harvard and I can't find a job. But you, Yale guy, I bet you can help (even though my own alumni have shit the bed thus far hooking a brotha up). "

Yes, that's a guaranteed winner.

The real world starts at graduation. Everyone has an allegiance to their school, but anyone who is not a complete toolbag is going to realize that there is more than one good school out there. Obviously, approach the networking differently.

Anyone who doesn't respond or responds negatively because you didn't go to their school isn't worth networking with anyway. Chances are that his fellow alumni don't like him and you would have established that he doesn't know anyone who went to other schools (due to the way he reacted to you).
