Having Trouble Taking Notes

Hello, I’m finding myself having a lot of trouble taking notes during client calls. I never really had an issue during school when it came to note taking since most of my classes had slides. I’m not sure if it’s just lack of sleep or an undiagnosed attention problem, but I can’t stop myself from zoning no matter how hard I try.

I’m a bit concern that I’m missing a lot of stuff on my notes, and although I have flagged this concern with my team, I have been told that performance has been great. Would appreciate any pointers or tips on how to be more efficient on client/buyers calls.

I think part of the issue is that you are unsure of what things are important, thus making it hard to pay attention and jot down the necessary notes. See if you can have a chat with other another person on the call prior to start to give you a few key points to focus on. I think that should help and provide you a guide until you get a little more up to speed.

Ive been on a similar position in an industry-focused PE shop and it seemed like once I started to understand the industry and terminology better, and understood what we were looking for, I got better at taking notes. One thing that helped was being interested in the meetings and thinking critically about what was being said (to keep attention levels up - and because the Director/Partners would always ask “so what do you think?” At the end of the meetings”, the other was having a pre-created structure for taking notes.

See if you can automate some parts of the note taking process (eg creating a pre-meeting note taking structure like Company / Competition / Financials / Roadmap /Investors / Deal Process / To Dos for next session, with pre-set secondary bullet points etc) if it’s feasible and find useful abbreviations

Also make sure you quickly read the notes of the previous meeting to make sure you’re not getting lost somewhere you shouldn’t
