Health issues from being in IB

Hi everyone,

I just returned FT in my bank's AM division and met back with some people from IBD that I met during my internship. In one year, they seem to have aged significantly, with grey hair, looking much more tired, and having noticeably gained/lost weight.

Is this decline inevitable in IB, or do these health impacts persist even after leaving?

Asking as I didn't expect it to be this bad and I believe it should be important for college students considering investment banking to be aware of this.

Many don’t know how to take care of themselves, I.e. eating junk food every day, snacks, no physical activities, not using the standing desk, etc. You can’t control the stress and long hours but you can control the above. Sure IB is bad for your health but you can mitigate the effects

Here’s the thing though. A lot of athletic (Obviously not D1 starting quarterbacks) guys I know are going through something similar. but the point is, the stress and shitty odd hours sucked enough life out, that it led them to eating/sleeping shit and completely dropping the ball.
Fact is, certain periods at certain teams would wear out even the most motivated..

Agree with this - while I agree with the comment below (i.e. negative health effects can be mitigated by eating right / working out), this only applies to an extent. There are many groups out there which are just too sweaty for even the most fitness-motivated to stay in shape / sane. I think if you want to stay in the industry long term you just have to accept that it will take a toll on your health to a degree.

And by the way, people are different - some people’s bodies will just be better than others at accepting high stress / long hours etc. vs. Others’

Try being glued to your desk in an understaffed group with a million things going on and you’ll realize you actually don’t have time to workout unless you want to stay up until 4 every day
