High Finance jobs in Ottawa and Canada

Can anyone share some insights into the job market for finance in Ottawa? Is there any high finance jobs?

Looking for something like IB/CB/Private Credit/Private Equity/ER?

What about commercial banking? I realize there might not be some high finance jobs but there has to be some commercial banking?

What about Canada more generally? Is the ranking something like this: Toronto,Montreal,Vancouver,Calgary and then everything else is pretty much non existent for high finance?

They have 5 people working there, and have been that way for the past two years.

Vancouver doesn’t really have any high finance. Super sweet city to live in but there’s more finance in calgary as vancouver only really had asset/wealth management, not much corporate

Montreal finance scene is good for buyside but has no legit sellside presence. Just some regional coverage. Calgary is flipped, poor buyside but the IB presence there is legit. Vancouver is the worst of both worlds: bad sellside, worse buyside.

Ottawa is pretty limited in the way of working in finance. Federal government dominates the job market

Firms/Offices in Ottawa that come to mind:

- Welch Capital Partners

- Sampford Advisors

- MD Financial

- 1832 Asset Management (regional office)

- PWL Capital

- Harris Computer

- Watson Di Primio Steel

- Federal gov: EDC, BDC, Public Service and Procurement RE investing

- Big 4 advisory and consulting

- Lots of small PWM shops

- feel free to mention any names I’m forgetting

Toronto has a very robust finance scene. Calgary and Montreal have some stuff going on. Vancouver is limited but not as limited as Ottawa.
