"Homework Assignment" after interview with Partners

Chimps,

So I had my interview with the partners yesterday and it went very well. Afterwards, I was e-mailed a "homework assignment" to work on over the weekend to submit by Monday.

It is for a real live engagement and if it is good he said they will use it in the pitch.

"Our client has asked us to provide scouting reports on the other “likely buyers” which might bid against us for PROJECT XYZ.

THIS IS A REAL ENGAGEMENT. Only use REAL information, and source it as best you can. If you do a good job, we will use this when we meet with our client next week…"

How should I proceed here? I mean, he has to know I don't have access to Capital IQ or any other subscription service that would provide more verifiable, detailed information. Do I just rely on the interwebs, public finance sites, etc. and source it as best as I can?

He provided some background material to get me started.

As an aside, I guess this is a good sign? If there is going to be 1 more round of interviews, and he is asking me to do this, I am guessing I will make it through to the next round, or at the very least, dependent on me doing a good job with this assignment?

The interview went really well so I guess I won't get too distraught about it.

Don't be afraid to make some assumptions. They want you to do a good job, but i doubt they will use it for the client pitch unless they completely don't care about the client or their reputation.

Do try to be resourceful and use their information to the fullest.

Do what you want not what you can!

Definitely see if people here will help you out. If you come back with data from capiq that will demonstrate a certain level of resourcefulness. Even if they don't use it, the fact that you found sources for data that they didn't provide for you shows you are willing and able to add value outside of the obvious resources they hand to you on a platter.

Solidaritytry searching on the bidders' websites for precedents, if they're public

but honestly, this sounds mad fucking ghetto

Turns out my buddy I'm crashing with in Boston this weekend has CapIQ and Bloomberg access from his laptop so I should be good on that.

But yah, I was a little caught off guard with the assignment, especially considering I had/have a bunch of other plans for the weekend. I think it is more of another qualifier though, he sent me a report another applicant for one of the analyst positions produced.

My name is Nicky, but you can call me Dre.

Does anyone wanna take a look at my "Scouting Report?" It is about 5 pages long, nothing too time-consuming but I wouldn't mind some feedback. I can e-mail it to you or PM you the link to download it.

I'm about to fire it off to one of the partners I interviewed with at 2:45am. Do you think that looks good, bad, irrelevant? Ah well ... there's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead.
