How difficult is it to break into ECM/DCM?

Currently working in PWM but I’ve lost interest in it. Been here for over 2 years working with clients with a net worth of $500m+ so have been fortunate to work with some interesting people and projects. Ultimately, I want to be more involved with the markets and I’m not getting the exposure I’d like here. I have some connections in the industry that are senior level and well connected so I've reached out to them for some advice. Just waiting on a night to grab some drinks. I’m not too sure how big of a hill I need to climb to make the jump since it’s part of IB which is typically quite competitive. Hoping someone can share their experience and provide any insights. Happy to provide more information if that will help.

The market is really hot right now and I have seen people with less relevant (relative) background enter IB recently - people who would have otherwise been overlooked pre-covid. My advice is to target the lower tier BBs ( RBC, UBS, Deutsche) as many analysts/associates from those banks are ‘trading up’ for better the better banks (GS/MS or EBs) given the overwhelming demand and there are plenty of open spots to be filled. Polish up your resume / pitch and start reaching out to bankers via LinkedIn and you should do fine. Be fast though - the market might not be that hot a few months from now.
