How do I leverage this connection into a guaranteed to offer?

So I reached out to an alumni at NYU who majored in economics just like how I am. He works a asset management position at JP Morgan, and is an executive Director on his team.

However, I’m actively trying to build my network for Investment Banking recruiting. But since he’s so senior, they bring him on the interview team when applications start getting reviewed.

We had a good call, talked about his time at NYU and how he started at JP Morgan and what his day-to-days look like. He also talked about how he likes to ask certain questions during his Interviews and specifically told me which exact one he always asks (macro, economic investment pitch.)

So we’ve been texting month-to-month since April and I reached out asking him if he knew anybody in the M&A space which he said he would refer me to.

This may be very blunt, but how can I work this connection to get him to push my résumé in or kind of have his name on me?

He's definitely not hiring for any M&A roles, CIB/AWM sit in different arms of the bank. Sounds like you need to expand your network (through him)

They’re different departments, you can’t guarantee he does shit for you and I’m sure he’s already picked up what you’re putting down with regards to potentially pushing your name or not.

Listen, best you can hope for is that when it’s time for applications in IBD to open, you apply through their portal but also send him an email update with your resume. Try to schedule a coffee chat around that time and pick his brain but again, make it known if he’s had any “advice” for the interview process “if you were to picked for interviews” *wink wink*. He’ll give you a generic sentence or two of advice and will either internally send an email connecting you to someone on the team OR you’ll get an email from HR saying that you’ve progressed to the next round of interviews. In that case it’s all on you to convert, he won’t help you beyond that.

Anonymous Monkey:

he does interviewing for AWM, theyre not bringing him in for IB interviews. dont push for an ib interview through him if he deflects; good way to ruin this relationship

To second this, he’s not doing IB interviews. You must be confused.

There are enough senior bankers actually in IB to choose for interviews, especially at JPM (of all places—literally the largest IB in the world).

They’re not pulling someone in from wealth management for IB interviews lol.

JPM process for NYU is ran by the recruiting captains which are analysts. They have structured chats where the captains or people on the recruiting team reach out to you for a chat. Most I can see this director doing for you is pushing you for a structured chat but from there if you bomb that chat, not a lot he could do.

They'll host an information session in the coming fall semester. Just attend that. But if this director is involved in the recruiting process for IB, he'll probably know aswell.
