How do investment banking referrals work if your resume is updated and if you have already applied

I've gotten referrals before getting a new internship opportunity, so my resume looks slightly different when I apply (doesn't have the new experience) vs what the resume on my referral is. Additionally, I've gotten referrals after I have already applied because I've been told to continue networking after applying. Do they all work the same? Do they just say look for this name? Do they say look for this resume? How does it all work and am I F***** now that a referral I have gotten was with a slightly different resume vs the one I applied with?
