How do you get an internship at any investment bank?
Are all target colleges only Ivy? If you go to a public college how would someone get an investment banking internship? What would be the first step of getting an internship?

Networking. There’s really no way around it
Set up a LinkedIn account, connect with bankers and have networking calls/coffee chats. Also send cold emails and do cold calls to boutiques.
What do you mean by cold calls or emails?
Certain public universities have strong presence and place well. As others have said, networking is essential.
There are non-Ivy targets depending on the bank. I doubt there will be any info sessions bc of COVID-19, but if some had planned on visiting campus you can ask someone in the career center for contact info.
Keep up a high GPA, leadership positions or other activities to show you have high initiative and to stand out in freshman year, sophomore internship, be ready for interview Qs, and to echo posts above: network, network, network.
What is considered a high GPA
Depending on the majors and universities. In business (accounting, finance, economics) at non-target universities, where my kids attend, I heard a high GPA means as close to 4.0 as possible, especially if you are in freshmen and sophomore years. However, high GPA may mean 3.3 in some of the engineering majors when profs do not curve at all and are notoriously tough graders.
