How good is Nottingham really?
I’ve seen people say that Notts is one of the strongest semi-targets for landing people jobs in IB. How true is this?
I see a lot of people from Notts get into IB on LinkedIn but a LOT of them are BAME or female.
This has lead me to question the strength of Notts, is it truly as good as everyone says or does it just have an advantage over other universities as a lot of their students may be considered as “diversity hires”?
It's shit

Well, at the undergraduate level, it isn't nearly as good as Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL, or Warwick - and is probably a bit below the likes of Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, and Bath. Given how small the UK is, being outside the T10 universities is equivalent to being outside of the T50 in the US.
It's a semi target, that's all that matters. The reason people so do well from there is they have a decent career oriented culture therefore a lot more people are applying and are motivated to apply. Going to another semi target vs Notts will make zero difference, whilst being in that Notts environment will probably be good to surround yourself with.
Anyone trying to split hairs between semi targets let alone between targets and semi targets is spending too much time on WSO. These days, especially for springs, the line between target and semi target has been blurred a lot at the big banks, given focus on diversity (which also includes university background).
As a data point, on one of my EB springs last year there was 4 people from Notts and zero from oxbridge
What does BAME stand for?

Is Asian and middle eastern considered diversity in the UK?
In America, being Asian or Indian can suck even more than being a white guy for diversity quotas.

Asians are diversity, but do not get any special applications or like insight day like black people do.
I've spoken to bank's D&I leads, the thing they care most about is filling their women's quota - usually like 50% of a class. Race does not matter (or at least that's the impression I got)
Pretty sure it stand for Black, Asian Minority Ethnic
Nottingham is a good school for investment banking, yes. They send a lot of people because they have a very strong application culture. Their societies are also sponsored by big banks. Mind you, they do well because they are a big university as well, so you might want to consider what the yield is i.e., successful applications for the entire student body. Some other universities are smaller and might have a similar yield to Nottingham, even though raw numbers are less.
But overall, you won't be put at any disadvantage applying from Nottingham. Good school, esp. economics.
I'd say Nottingham punches above it's weight for sure. After Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Warwick and Durham, it does place well, has established links with firms and a good place to apply from.
