How helpful is management consulting for FT IB roles
Hey everyone, kind of a unique situation so I’d like to ask for some advice. I’m a junior at a semi target, and I’m interning at McKinsey this summer. I’m kind of however more drawn to banking and am interested in trying to recruit for it FT. I’m active in one of the investment funds at my school and I’d say I am prepared for banking interviews. I was just curious if management consulting looks impressive on an application for an IB role, as the work is not really similar. Prior to this, I had a CRE internship both my freshman and sophomore summers, so not much investing experience either. Is trying to recruit FT for IB even worth it? For reference I don’t hate consulting at all, I just find banking more interesting. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
You won't be a shoe-in off the bat not because you interned at McKinsey but because FT recruiting is so slim.
I broke in FT with a F500 FP&A internship, so I would say that yes – McKinsey would look great for FT applications.
If IB is your long term, that still may be difficult for FT. If you want PE, recruit for the analyst programs that are out there. The MBB skillset aligns much closer with PE than IB
I disagree with the other posters here. Provided you can get your story straight, I think you'd be a strong candidate -- people know that MCC summer offers are harder to get than IB summer offers (in terms of % of full-time spots granted). And then the cherry on top, you'd have the opportunity to tell bankers in your interviews that "consulting isn't that great and I saw the light". They'll love the validation.
