How is the IB lateral market for FT analysts?

Am starting my first year at a LMM firm on the East Coast soon. I’d like to lateral after a year as an A2 to a MM/BB/EB, preferably to a West Coast office. I graduated from a West Coast target (UCB/USC/UCLA) with a 3.84 but I haven’t networked much.

How feasible is my goal given my background and the current lateral market, how should I balance networking with 80 hour weeks, and when should I start recruiting seriously given I want to stay until my bonus hits in early July?

The IB lateral market for FT analysts is competitive but feasible, especially with your strong academic background from a West Coast target and a solid GPA. Here's what you need to know and do:

  1. Feasibility of Your Goal:

    • Moving from a LMM firm to a MM/BB/EB is achievable, but it will depend on your deal experience, networking efforts, and timing.
    • West Coast offices often value candidates with ties to the region, which works in your favor given your educational background.
  2. Balancing Networking with Long Hours:

    • Networking is critical for lateraling, especially since you haven’t done much yet. Start by reaching out to alumni from your school who are at MM/BB/EB firms, particularly those in West Coast offices.
    • Use weekends or early mornings to schedule informational calls or coffee chats. Be strategic and efficient with your time—quality over quantity.
    • Leverage LinkedIn and your alumni network to identify key contacts and build relationships gradually.
  3. When to Start Recruiting:

    • Most analysts aiming to lateral begin networking around the 6-month mark and start applying seriously after completing their first year.
    • Since you want to stay until your bonus hits in early July, you should start networking immediately and ramp up your efforts in the spring. This will give you a head start when lateral hiring picks up in the summer.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Focus on building a strong deal sheet during your first year. Highlight any notable transactions or responsibilities that showcase your skills.
    • Keep your lateral search discreet to avoid jeopardizing your current role.
    • Consider working with recruiters who specialize in IB lateral placements, as they can provide insights into open roles and market trends.

By starting early, being consistent with networking, and timing your move strategically, your goal of lateraling to a MM/BB/EB on the West Coast is well within reach.
