How much flexibility is there for associates to attend weddings?

Heading to b school soon and recruiting for IB. I care a lot about my personal relationships and expect to be in the wedding parties of at least 8-10 people that I just can’t miss. Obviously would communicate in an extremely timely manner but wanted to get your thoughts from analysts/associates on how flexible teams are with attending weddings - as long as it give a proper heads up and don’t take that much time off, will this be a problem?

Obviously not attending 10 weddings in a year, but would imagine at least 3-4 a year and I would be fine not taking any other PTO as long as I can attend for those I care about. Is this an unrealistic expectation?

It depends the shop and era of the job, but you might have a bad time going in with that attitude and be underestimating the demands of the role.

For context, I had a director that did work on her honeymoon. I’m pretty sure if you asked her to take time off for a wedding she wouldn’t understand the concept.

That said, many places give 15 days of vacation. Respect for vacation time really varies based on office and group. My group was pretty good and if someone was on vacation they wouldn’t message that person. As a result, with 15 vacation days, doing 4 weddings a year would be feasible and not a problem. However, I also had friends who during all their vacations they had to do work because the groups didn’t really have a respect of boundaries for vacation policy.

I get that’s pretty unhelpful, but it’s so group and culture dependent. I would be cautious asking that question to people though, because my immediate thought is you are underestimating the demands of the role and might lack the intensity for the industry (even though I think the question actually shows you just are a well adjusted person who can hold interpersonal relationships).

This is typically fine, banks try to protect the days off for analyst/ASO and assuming you're taking Fri-Sun off this is generally going to be okay.

Of course it can't be "sorry I said I was taking this day off and that is THAT" maybe once a year you will need to bring your laptop and work part of Friday, a bit the morning of etc. But I wouldn't be sitting around worried you are going to miss all of your friends' weddings.

The wedding itself is going to be on a weekend so it becomes a question of how demanding are you going to be about being able to participate in all the fanfare leading up to the wedding.

If you’re telling your VP/D that you’re a groomsman and you just need to be busy for a rehearsal dinner Friday and the wedding itself on Saturday (plus out of pocket for a bit while flying there), I’m sure he will be understanding.  You an work from the hotel.

But if you’re going to be one of those people who needs Wed thru Fri off bc you want to be fully dialed in to all the wedding stuff, yeah that’s going to get annoying when you have a live deal.

My hit rate is about 75% undisturbed on weddings. Where things get hairy is when you’re the model SME and you’ve gotta output 10 different cases on a laptop and it’s time sensitive. Or you’re managing a DD stream and need to do a weekend client call. You should be able to time that stuff to know in advance the likelihood you might get blown up while on the road.

Attention kids in undergrad and high school: please read this post carefully and make sure you actually want to do this job lmao. Asking if it’s ok to go to a friend’s wedding on the weekend. This job is really like that, I wish I had actually considered how much this sucks and not just focused on the money and I just hope some of you consider this before you sign up

Not really dude. OP is just dramatic and anxious (he admitted he’s a student that hasn’t even worked in IB). He’s worried he’s gonna miss his hypothetical 4 weddings a year and the response from all the actual professionals is pretty much that he has nothing to worry about.

Been in this job for years. Have not missed a single wedding. Nobody on my team has ever missed a single wedding because of work. Yes, we work extremely hard. No, we do not force each other to miss once in a lifetime events. Yes, we have a clear rule that we step in and step up for each other during major life events. Now, if OP tries to justify 20 vacation days and 20 sick days every year to fulfill his all important “groomsmen responsibilities” at his 10 weddings, then we can all eat popcorn and see what happen.

Obligatory: "Let me tell you what's required: you are required to work your ******* *** off at this firm.  We want winners here, not pikers. A piker walks at the bell.  A piker asks how much vacation time you get in the first year. Vacation? People come to this firm for one reason: to become filthy rich, that's it.  We're not here to make friends.  We're not saving the ******* manatees here guys.  You want vacation time? Go teach third grade public school."

My group gives us 20 days of vacation and we can use whenever just let your deal teams know a few weeks in advance and also a day or two before

Should be common for people
