How much modeling did you know before starting FT?
I'm starting in a few weeks for a tech M&A group. So far, I've mostly only dealt with 3 statement models as well as DCF/LBOs on a relatively high level in the academic setting. Talking to people on my team, we use these types of models pretty infrequently, most of what we do is based around multiples and operating models. Training is supposed to be pretty involved/good as well.
Is there anything I should do before to make sure that I'm up to speed before? Is this something I need to be worried about? I went over the high level technical and did some brushing up on shortcuts in Excel/PPT, but is that enough? I got my offer FT without a SA stint (really lucked out), so just don't want to get left behind. Thanks!
Bump. In same boat

LBO / DCF will come up when you do pitchbooks and sometimes as an illustrative exercise, but the bread and butter of modeling is how well you can build an operating model. Being able to take a QofE, layer on pro forma acquisitions, add in different cases and have revenue by segments / departments. Depending on what type of revenue stream, doing a backlog burn or probability weighted contract pipeline. If doing a subscription business, being able to sus out billings vs revenue and account for revenue recognition artifacts
word this guy knows what’s up
And is this something you were able to do coming in to the job easily, or was it something you picked up gradually through studying existing work product and ramping up over time? Thanks!
