How prestigious was Blackstone in the 1990s?
Was it one of the top places to start a career and did it attract the top talent? Or did some of the early employees (ie Jon Gray) get lucky in that they took a job at a less desired company that is now the best?
The reason why Jon Gray is a billionaire is because he helped build the BX real estate practice into the powerhouse it is today.
Meaning he likely took a gamble in not going to one of the established players when he took this first gig?
Yes, I think he mentions it in the Wharton commencement speech he gave. He joined the firm when it was less than 100 people, and they were just starting their real estate business. He also talks about how at the time they did really small deals (on the order of a couple million dollars) as they built up their expertise over time. So just based on that, I can’t imagine it was the ideal role for someone who wanted the most prestigious name on their resume.
