How to network during SA to lateral for FT w out group knowing?

It’s like if I hop on a call how do I chat w someone and tell them I wanna switch firms when I’m 2 weeks into an internship ? My group does no modeling…. I want technical reps, plain and simple but don’t want it getting back to my group.

To network discreetly during your summer analyst (SA) internship and position yourself for a lateral move to a full-time (FT) role, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Timing Your Networking Efforts:

    • Start networking early, but be strategic. Ideally, begin reaching out to other firms before your internship starts or during the early weeks. This allows you to build connections without raising suspicion.
    • Avoid waiting too long, as FT recruiting processes can move quickly, and you want to be on other firms' radars early.
  2. Framing Your Intentions:

    • When speaking with professionals at other firms, focus on your career goals rather than criticizing your current group. For example, you can say you’re looking for a role that offers more technical exposure or aligns better with your long-term aspirations (e.g., private equity or M&A).
    • Use neutral language like “I’m exploring opportunities to gain more hands-on modeling experience” rather than directly stating dissatisfaction with your current group.
  3. Discretion is Key:

    • Avoid discussing your intentions with anyone in your current group. Even casual comments can spread and jeopardize your position.
    • When networking, use personal devices and accounts (not work email or phone) to maintain privacy.
  4. Networking Tactics:

    • Reach out to associates or professionals at your target firms via LinkedIn or email. Associates are often more involved in lateral hiring processes and can provide valuable insights.
    • Frame your outreach as a desire to learn more about their group or firm. For example, “I’ve heard great things about your team’s deal flow and would love to hear about your experience.”
    • Suggest informal chats, like grabbing coffee or hopping on a quick call, to build rapport.
  5. Handling Calls During the Internship:

    • Schedule calls outside of work hours or during lunch breaks to avoid drawing attention. If you’re working remotely, ensure you’re in a private space where you won’t be overheard.
    • Keep conversations professional and concise. Focus on learning about the firm and expressing your interest without explicitly stating you’re looking to leave your current group.
  6. Follow-Up:

    • Stay in touch with your new connections by following up periodically. Lateral roles can open unexpectedly, so maintaining these relationships is crucial.

By networking strategically and discreetly, you can position yourself for a lateral move without jeopardizing your current internship.
