How to network with people in specific groups?

This is my first post so I am sorry if the formatting is bad. I am currently a rising sophomore at a semitarget (think USC, Emory, Vandy) and I am interested in reaching out to bankers in specific groups this summer. I will be working in asset management; however, I really want to develop relationships with bankers while I am in NYC so that I can keep in touch throughout the year and work toward an investment banking internship after my junior year.

I wanted to know whether it is better to reach out to people in HR departments or directly to bankers and how do find the contact information of people who are currently working in specific groups. Any advice is appreciated.

Reach out directly to bankers. Also, you can find people in specific groups by searching for it on LinkedIn, and once you have their name just find the email of a random person (HR is probably easiest) from the bank's website so that you know the email format (in most cases it is [email protected]). You could also try emailing HR if you are not able to crack the format.

Thank you for your response. What should my goal be in reaching out to these bankers over the summer? While I am only a rising sophomore, I want to put myself in the best position for an internship following my junior year. What level banker should be my ideal target (ex, associate, vp, md, etc) and how do I communicate this goal to them?

Agree that VP's/Directors are probably the sweet spot, but you really want to get your name out there and talk to whoever you can. Also, you should polish your phone call skills by starting off with analysts, perhaps at places that aren't as high on your priority list.

Coffee should be fine, depends on the person. Main point should be to convey interest in their bank and them as a person, show that you are socially calibrated person, and show that you aren't a complete moron. For more details read any of the hundreds of threads on networking on this website.
