How to Push Back on Lengthy Interview Process?

I had 5-10 interviews with this one group across 4 months (soon to be 5). While I am interested in joining the group, I do feel as though this process is starting to become excessive and pro-longed.

How do I communicate this to the team without dinging myself?

To address a lengthy interview process without jeopardizing your candidacy, here’s what you can do based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Express Enthusiasm While Setting Boundaries: Start by reiterating your interest in the role and the team. For example, say something like, "I’ve really enjoyed learning more about the team and the role over the past few months." This reinforces your commitment while setting a positive tone.

  2. Seek Clarity on the Process: Politely ask for an update on the timeline. You could phrase it as, "I wanted to check in to understand where we are in the process and if there are additional steps expected before a decision is made." This shows professionalism and curiosity without sounding impatient.

  3. Highlight Your Commitment: Mention that you’ve been actively engaged throughout the process. For instance, "I’ve appreciated the opportunity to meet with so many members of the team and gain a deeper understanding of the role." This subtly reminds them of the effort you’ve already invested.

  4. Address the Timeline Diplomatically: If the process feels excessive, you can gently bring it up by saying, "I understand the importance of finding the right fit, and I want to ensure I’m able to manage my commitments effectively. Is there a way to streamline the remaining steps?" This approach is respectful and positions you as someone who values efficiency.

  5. Be Prepared for Their Response: If they explain the need for additional steps, remain professional and decide if you’re willing to continue. If not, you can politely withdraw by saying, "While I remain very interested in the role, I believe the extended timeline may not align with my current situation. I hope we can stay in touch for future opportunities."

By maintaining a balance of professionalism, enthusiasm, and assertiveness, you can communicate your concerns without risking your candidacy.

Ignore my title and am much senior. You are not their first choice but they expect turnover and are dragging you along. Best way is to get another offer and let them know.

I think so too. 5-10 rounds of conversations and interviews is almost too much.

Lateral process from start to end shouldn’t last more than 1-2 weeks if they are serious about hiring you. One round with AS/VP, and final round with D/MD. I have even seen these processes wrapped up within a week at reputable shops
