IB Hiring Managers, would you give Fernando Mendoza an offer if he couldn't do an LBO, just by being D1 and winning the National Championship or answer like a really simple technical question.
IB Hiring Managers, would you give Fernando Mendoza an offer if he couldn't do an LBO, just by being D1 and winning the National Championship? I always joke that being D1 goes a long way in recruiting. Fernando Mendoza, based on his interviews, seems like he would be an awesome guy to work with by the way.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, being a D1 athlete and winning a National Championship can certainly make a candidate stand out in investment banking recruiting. It demonstrates qualities like discipline, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure—traits highly valued in the industry. However, technical skills, such as the ability to perform an LBO model, are often non-negotiable for many firms, especially in private equity or technical IB roles.
As highlighted in WSO threads, many firms expect candidates to excel in technical tests, including LBO modeling, even if they come from non-traditional backgrounds like consulting or athletics. While being personable and a great cultural fit (as Fernando Mendoza seems to be) is a significant advantage, it’s unlikely to completely offset a lack of technical proficiency in highly competitive recruiting processes. Firms may still consider such candidates if they show a strong willingness to learn and improve their technical skills quickly.
In short, while being a D1 athlete and having a great personality can open doors, mastering the technical aspects is crucial to securing an offer in investment banking.

Not specifically directed at Mendoza, but broadly speaking if I were hiring to build a team in finance I would hire kids with heart and proven they can work hard and be winners. You can teach someone to build LBOs, but you can't teach them effort. D1 athletes are generally top notch in their sports as well as top notch team contributors (Mendoza is no exception) and you see a ton in IB/S&T
I would hire him and bring him to all my pitches just to sit there and tell football stories. Pretty sure my win rate would double even if he didnt know how to use a keyboard.
