IB in Jakarta (Indonesia) & Hong Kong

Hey guys, just curious, how's IB faring in Jakarta (Indonesia)? I got family there and was wondering if targeting a BB jakarta office would be a great idea (would it show global experience? or would it limit my full-time offers,if any, more towards Asia?) same questions for Hong Kong.

Feel free to talk about culture at each of the offices. How different is it from NYC?

Thanks!

You could probably publish a book with the amount of material written regarding this topic, on this forum. Do a search.

Jakarta is special. Many banks closed their branches after the Asian Crisis and a lot of deals are actually covered out of Singapore. Strong banks in JKT include e.g. DB.

My girlfriend has family there too, visited them once. The city can very well be considered a shithole and many people want to get out of there.

Don't think it would hurt your FT chances to intern there though. Actually, interviewers might be very interested in hearing some stories.

Btw if you score an internship in Jakarta, arrive some weeks earlier to spend the time on Bali, which is very close.

Thanks Xenu

Been to Bali before, and it was amazing! Yeah, you're spot on with the shithole thing :D so if I get a HK offer...go for it instead?

Im saudi arabian, but Im doing college in the U.S. Im building up a list of places I should target for my internship through networking, thats why Im all curious about jakarta.

I'd love to intern here, but my past tells me otherwise. I interned at a large regional IB the summer between HS and college....was fun, but didn't learn much or do as much gruntwork as a summer analyst should. People come at 8 AM or 9 AM and leave work at 3 o'clock PM (Check:PM) on a regular basis... but internships are supposed to mimic the real deal! even my VP told me that if I could, I should go to NYC or London and get a few years of experience before being spoiled in Saudi with their fluffy hours. According to him, this is the same case even at the bigger IBs in Saudi.

Are you interested in working here?
