IB internship dilemma during leave of absence

it's just been a week since i started browsing this forum, and i dont have too much background in this industry anyway, so i may sound very dumb at times.

im a rising junior at a fairly decent (non-target, i'd say second tier for business) undergrad - with a 3.5 and a decent number of ec (none of which are directly related to ib, but business-y enough for me to have had an internship and an externship - again not ib)

long story short, i dont have a choice but to take a year off from school because of personal reasons in my family so i wont be able to graduate until 2013, not 2012 as i had expected.

further background: ive always been interested in ib, always with a vague idea, but now with a slightly clearer understanding, id like to try it out. ive also been interested in pwm so i want to try that out as well - as you may be able to tell, im still not 100% on anything and my goal is to get an exp during the year i have. the only problem is, i need it to be paid because of personal financial constraints. i know it's hard to land an opportunity as it is, and asking for a paid position makes it just harder, but that's the situation im facing right now.

so here is my question: would you guys suggest trying to network my way into finding a paid internship/position at a boutique bank or try to find something at a pwm branch at a bb? i live in the LA area and my school's network is not so favorable in this region, but im banking on our good alumni connection - though ive been holding onto networking just yet. now i do see a couple of pwm intern positions at a bb (UBS LA) but i havent reached out yet. note that im looking for a position that will most benefit my resume (assuming that i want to pursue ib after i graduate) given that i have a year before i go back to school as a junior next year. and as mentioned before, it needs to be paid in the LA region.

please, i'd love any serious feedback, your advice would be greatly appreciated
