Renewable Energy IB Modeling Test Prep

I have a two-hour modelling test next week for Renewable Energy IB team at Intern/Analyst level. Not sure what to expect, and need to prepare starting from roughly zero. I do not want to spend $450-$900 for the Pivotal180 course, any recommendations on what to do to prepare and where I can quickly learn to model a wind/solar asset? Or is it necessary to pay up?

To prepare for your Renewable Energy IB modeling test without spending a fortune, here’s a focused plan based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Leverage Free Financial Modeling Resources:

    • WSO offers 9 free financial modeling lessons that cover essential topics like financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and Comps. These lessons are taught by experienced private equity professionals and investment bankers. You can access them directly on WSO and even get 27 financial modeling templates as a bonus.
  2. Focus on Renewable Energy-Specific Modeling:

    • While the free lessons provide a strong foundation, you’ll need to tailor your preparation to renewable energy assets like wind and solar. Start by understanding the key drivers for these assets:
      • Revenue: Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), electricity prices, capacity factors.
      • Costs: Operating expenses, maintenance, and capital expenditures.
      • Financing: Debt structures, tax equity, and cash flow waterfalls.
    • Use the templates from WSO to practice building a basic project finance model.
  3. WSO Elite Modeling Package:

    • If you’re willing to invest a bit, the WSO Elite Modeling Package offers six courses, including LBO, DCF, and M&A modeling. It’s a more affordable alternative to Pivotal180 and provides comprehensive training for finance careers.
  4. Bootcamps for Quick Learning:

    • Consider WSO’s Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp (2 days) or the IB Interview Bootcamp (4 hours). These are intensive and cover Excel, M&A, 3-statement models, and more. They’re designed for quick upskilling and are cost-effective compared to other courses.
  5. Practice with Realistic Scenarios:

    • Use the WSO templates library to simulate renewable energy scenarios. Focus on building a simple model for a wind or solar project, incorporating assumptions like capacity, production, and financing.
  6. Supplement with Free Online Resources:

    • Look for free guides or YouTube tutorials on renewable energy project finance. These can help you understand the industry-specific nuances without additional cost.

By combining WSO’s free resources, templates, and potentially a bootcamp or the Elite Modeling Package, you can prepare effectively without breaking the bank. Good luck with your test!

probably too late on this. which firm was it for? greenbridge infrastructure has been huge for this kind of stuff. they have case studies to prepare students for these modeling tests at the likes of Marathon, CRC-IB, PF banks, and investors. super affordable too and lots of other resources like specialized interview questions from industry
