IB, Power, Utilities and Infra

Hi everyone,

I have almost a year under my belt of project finance experience at a renewable energy developer. I applied for an IB analyst position at NBF (NBC) and they have invited me over for an in person interview with 2 directors. The interview is 30 minutes only.

Anyone experienced it? Can you please tell me what kind of questions are they going to ask me? Since it’s 30 minutes only with 2 directors is it going to be behavioral and technical? What should i focus on?

Appreciate all the help everyone

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know for your upcoming interview:

  1. Behavioral Questions:

    • Expect classic behavioral questions like "Walk me through your resume," "Why investment banking?" and "Why this bank?"
    • Be prepared to discuss your background in project finance and how it aligns with the role. Highlight transferable skills like financial modeling, deal structuring, and working with renewable energy projects.
    • Be ready to talk about specific experiences, such as a time you solved a problem, worked under pressure, or collaborated with a team.
  2. Technical Questions:

    • Given your project finance background, they might test your understanding of valuation techniques, financial statements, and project-specific metrics.
    • Be prepared for questions on DCF, WACC, and possibly LBOs, as these are common in IB interviews.
    • Since you're coming from a renewable energy developer, they might ask about industry-specific knowledge, such as valuing renewable energy assets or understanding power purchase agreements (PPAs).
  3. Focus Areas for a 30-Minute Interview:

    • With only 30 minutes and two directors, the interview will likely be a mix of behavioral and technical questions.
    • Directors often focus on high-level fit and your ability to articulate your experiences clearly and concisely.
    • Prepare a strong "Why IB?" and "Why NBF?" answer. Research the bank's deals, culture, and focus areas to tailor your responses.
  4. Preparation Tips:

    • Practice a concise and compelling resume walkthrough (90 seconds max).
    • Review key technical concepts using guides like the WSO IB Interview Course or the 400 M&I questions.
    • Be ready to discuss trends in the power, utilities, and infrastructure sectors, especially renewable energy.

Good luck with your interview! Make sure to stay polished, confident, and concise.

This is a new team and I happened to work with a couple of them in the past.

Renewables focused team working with a lot of greenfield development platforms so need to know your basics: from accounting basics to industry nuances. Know the DSCR for merchant versus PPA, know the discount rate (wind higher than solar), know how to get from revenue to CFADS to cash flow.

Prob some behavioral questions too, but again, never interviewed with them.
