IB to Diplomatic Job
Hi,
Passionate of politics, geopolitics and more since I’m young, studied something in those lines at uni, but got interested in IBD and chose to give it a try so ended up at one of the top BB GS/MS/JPM. I like IBD, learning a lot of things, meeting nice people that often have done quite a lot in their lives. However, I often find myself thinking or wanting to take a European Commission or UN job. It just feels like it’d be more in line with who I am as a person, and what I care about. Would love to work on issues such as global warming, management of an International organisation investments for infrastructure in emerging countries etc. Does anyone have experience with switching to a similar job after IB?
I know some people at the EU Comm & UN but looks like a very very closed world
I can not tell how to switch from IB to the UN or similar, but a lot of my family members work in this field. They focused their studies and internships around it and then applied for roles.
approach 1) would be finding the "government affairs" group in your bank, they are not hugely influential as banking is already heavily regulated. But they at least know a few contacts.
2) would be simply looking at the jobs the various bodies have and apply for them? They do have finance jobs come up every once in a while.
...
You should look into Sovereign Advisory at an EB or Pub Fin. Would give you the chance to get you more connected with government officials and bureaucrats, then if you want to make the switch it would be a bit more straight forward.
How much do these roles pay?
Like DCM
Lazard has a geopolitical advisory group which is taking an analyst. Though they’re looking for someone with previous political experience.
One path for you would be to get a master's (of some kind) and shoot for the World Bank's Young Professional's Program:

I wouldn't recommend moving to a gov-facing role at a bank and trying to break in from there. Those teams are best left as revolving doors for former NGO / think tank / policy wonk types that want to make some money, not the other way around, as your experience won't really be valued at the places you seem to be targeting.
At the end of the day though, you're going to need to do some research and be WAY more specific. You've basically described 3 entirely separate career fields in your post. Oh, and you should go get proficient in a foreign language or 3.
