IB vs MBB Recruiting

IB SA26 Internships Recruiting Start:

  • Investment Banking (IB): Recruiting for Summer Analyst (SA) positions typically starts very early. For example, 2024 SA recruiting started early in the year, so it's reasonable to expect that 2026 SA recruiting will also start early, likely in the first half of 2025.

MBB SA26 Internships Recruiting Start:

  • Management Consulting (MBB): While the exact timeline for MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) can vary, it generally follows a similar early recruiting schedule. It's advisable to start preparing and networking well in advance, as these firms also begin their processes early.

Simultaneous Recruiting:

  • Recruiting for Both: It is possible to recruit for both IB and MBB simultaneously, but it requires excellent time management and strategic planning. Both fields are highly competitive and demanding, so balancing the preparation and networking for both can be challenging.

Most Important Factors for Each:

  • Investment Banking (IB):

    • Networking: Building relationships within the industry is crucial.
    • Technical Skills: Proficiency in financial modeling and valuation.
    • Internship Experience: Prior relevant internships can significantly boost your chances.
    • Behavioral Fit: Demonstrating leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Management Consulting (MBB):

    • Case Interview Skills: Mastery of case interviews is essential.
    • Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
    • Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication is critical.
    • Academic Excellence: A strong academic record from a top-tier institution.

For more detailed timelines and specific strategies, it's recommended to keep an eye on the recruiting announcements from both industries and start networking as early as possible.

Got offers from both BB/MBB for SA25. IB kicks off around early Jan when lots of the apps open, though I believe there are a few that open in Nov/Dec (all the major ones open after the new year). You need to apply like the day they open, and should be networking now.

For consulting, the B and B have early/mid July deadlines. McK is later, like Sept. These all review after deadline, no rolling.

Not entirely sure about PE or RX, but they seem to be around the IB timeline just maybe earlier and more competitive. If you're European/Asian, you can also consider EMEA/APAC options for IB/MBB which would start around summer 2025.

Thanks for the feedback. For MBB, I’m assuming your saying that for B and B the deadline is July of 2025 for junior year summer associate 2026 internships not July 2024? Is that correct? Thanks

Thanks so much for the information. Given all of this information, am I too late for networking for IB/ MBB 2026 internships? I really haven’t done much outside of networking with people who my parents know, but they aren’t part of IB/ MBB firms but are still very connected to them.

Any advice you would have for networking at this stage would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much

not too late, start grinding IB networking asap, start interview prep in december. Repeat during spring 2025 for MBB, grind networking and case prep (very very important).

Tons of networking guides on here, I think "Sil" had a good one especially. get ur cold email format down and target the alumni of ur university as well as anyone you/your parents know, maybe if ur parent's friends can hook you up with some calls that'd be great as well, and also anyone with any sort of connection you to improve response rate (same sport, same fan of xyz sports team, same hometown/hs, etc)

Ofc, honestly I'd start your interview prep over your Thanksgiving break if you can -- if you give it 2-3 solid hours a day for those 3-4 days you have off and you'll have a great foundation to continue while in school after thanksgiving break. Also get your resume in order ASAP, WSO format and get everybody you know in IB/consulting/finance to review it. cover your technicals, get your why ib, why xyz bank, and "story" in order for sure. And keep preparing and mock interviewing throughout and you'll have a good foundation for your interviews! Good luck, you got this and really hit the networking hard (although I wouldn't schedule any emails for this upcoming week, schedule them all for the Tuesday-Wednesday mornings after thanksgiving IMO)

Hey, I was reading through Sil’s guide (it was really informative) and, if you have the time, I have 2 quick questions:

  1. I see that the months that Sil mentions for networking is between April- August. Given, I’m quite late in the process and only have roughly a month until GS applications open, how would you recommend I approach a more networking in this shortened time? Should I cut steps like the in person meeting?

  2. Also, given the JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley opened applications in September, is networking there useless? If so, could I still apply now (from a target school and with a good resume) and have good chances for an interview?

  3. Lastly, I’m am incoming transfer to Georgetown for spring from Georgia Tech. Should I approach my networking to Georgetown alumni any differently as I have not been to the university yet?

Thank you so much for your continued help!
