Ideas for an IB club
I'm starting an IB/M &A club at my school and Im wondering what other schools maybe doing for their clubs.
I mostly want to revolve the club around guest speakers. Students can learn modeling and other technical skills themselves.
Thanks for the ideas in advance.Additionally is it even possible to differentiate the club from an investment club or finance club ? Thanks
I run the club at my school. We get guest speakers from local firms to speak. It's helpful for our members to get freshmen and sophomore internships. We also get alumni in banking to come speak. Aside from guest speakers, I think it is really important to maybe have a couple meetings to explain to your members what investment banking is. You would be surprised to see people how many people say they only want to do IB, but think it has something to do with investing and the only bank they can rattle off is Goldman Sachs. I also think it is important to teach people how to not to be the worst when they network.
Yes of course. Thanks
Additionally I am thinking about M & A case competitions. Hopefully I can find some.
I know this comment is a year old, but I'm running a club that will also involve guest speakers. I was wondering: how do you go about reaching out to these guest speakers? Do you extend an honorarium in exchange for their time, or do they volunteer?
I don't think you really need to incentivize someone to speak at your club. People love talking about themselves and their career. You'd be surprised about what kind of fulfillment they get from it. Just try to tap your network to it's fullest. Ask your finance professors if they know anyone in the industry and have them give a warm intro or have them make the ask. Reach out to people who were previous members of the club and ask if they would like to speak. You can even gas them up a little bit and say something like, "We would love to have a successful alumni from our club speak to current members.". I even cold reached out to local firms in our area and had success. Just give it a shot.
Maybe get together and study the Rosenbaum text book or other finance/investment banking books
Rosenbaum is quite a good resource. Would make for some very dry discussions, but it is easy and accessible.
make sure to get a core group of people in your club before you invite too many speakers...wouldn't want you to be the only one in the audience. You also have to consider whether this club is going to be something you enjoy, or something that you are doing for your resume.
Yeah of course. I have met a lot of students who want to pursue an Ib career and I have plans for the club to help students at my school. Just needed some more ideas.
Have seen a lot of these clubs come through on resumes. A few tips
- Need an audience as others said - if you're at a total non-target with no business school, good luck. You need to have a good base of potential joiners to make this work, and the clubs usually peter out after a year or two because there's not enough interest in an IB specific club
- Guest speakers are definitely valuable, also think you should have official mock interviews. These are tough to do on your own and non-finance family or friends might not have the right feedback for you
Please don't just get together and read Rosenbaum, you will lose members and there are way better things you can do. Have group case studies on recent deals (good for the resume and interview questions) official Google doc and Groupme with interview timelines/applications, access to alums, networking tips and support.
Thanks for the great advice.
I was wondering the specifics on studying a M & A deal.
How would we go about effective analyzing the case? Just pointing out synergies/valuation method and etc?
