IM BACK...With a little more experience
A couple months ago I posted a topic about breaking into Banking from Accounting so here I wanted to post an update to kind of get a feel of what my chances are now. I have had 2 internships with Big 4 doing transaction services and I also completed an internship with Citigroup (Wealth Managment). Do keep in mind a go to a non target....infact its not even on the map!
But here is the thing. I am aware it is hard to get into banking, but I am also aware its not as hard as people on here try to make it seem. So please, only honest assesments, put your ego down for a second and give advice that would actually help me out.
PS: I am a minority so do Banks have diversity recruiters? that would be a HUGE help in my opinion because I know they get desperate sometimes.
It sounds like you've got some good applicable work experience. I don't know what other advice you're looking for other than to just get out there and network, send your resume out, and hope for an interview. Of course it's not impossible to get into banking, but if you go to a non-target school, you're going to need to prove to banks that you are worth the time and hassle of an interview.
I would recommend asking EVERYONE you know, family & relatives, friends, frat brothers, people at church, whomever - if they know someone in banking. Contact those people and ask them interesting questions, eventually asking them what steps you could take to secure a position at their firm (many will offer to help you out first).
Also, go to your career center or look in the alumni directory and find alums in banking. The more off the map your school is, the more likely whoever you find will help you. Email or cold call these people - search for threads on this, there are many and a lot of good advice has been given.
Your experience seems pretty solid, I'm sure you have extracurriculars and a solid gpa if you could get those internships. It's all networking from here.
Edit - if you are a business major, ask your professors. They will often know a lot of people in the field, and will help out if they like you.
I actually come from a similar background (Big 4 audit) and I have several friends of mine who came from Big 4 to jump into banking. Out of 6 of my buddies that wanted to get into banking (while at Big 4), 5 of them have jumped to banks (2 JPMorgan, 1 BofA, 1 Lehman, 1 Goldman). One of them just didn't know anything about finance, so if you know your stuff and could land some interviews, I'd say you've got a fair chance.
