Imposter Syndrome as an Associate
Hi - I just started at the beginning of the year as an associate at a small M&A IB boutique in NYC.
I had the opportunity to lateral from another vertical into investment banking. In this way, I am actually younger than some of the analysts who are under me, and don't have the same modeling experience.
I am constantly feeling like an "imposter" because I don't have an MBA or the experience of being an analyst. I know the work I put out is good and I was hired for a reason.
Any tips to quell this feeling (of being too young and little experience in my position)?
First off, congrats on the move!
The analyst years are a good foundation, but honestly, non-traditional paths into banking can offer similar experiences. If (a) your technical knowledge is on par for your level, (b) work ethic is strong and (c) you're adaptable and can learn on the fly, you already have the foundation.
Are you struggling with the work? Do you feel like you're in over your head? If the answers are no, you're fine. Congrats on skipping a year of spreading comps and rearranging logos.
I'm in the same boat. I am working in a prestigious research group for a BB as an associate currently (and before any equity research hardos come in with "AssOcIAtes aRe ReaLlY fiRst yEAr's in rEsearCh bRo!", no. My group has analysts, associates, VPs and MDs. Not every group works the same way).
I was hired out of a very non-prestigious regional commercial bank. I came from a lower ranked school, with no grad education. Both of the analysts on my team have Ivy league masters degrees. I know why I was hired, and I'm confident I can add value. That being said, I just can't shake this feeling that I don't belong sometimes.
What's been most helpful for me so far is just not being an asshole. The analysts will know more than you. That's ok. Add value now however you can (not BS powerpoint edits), and work on making up the skill gap as efficiently as you can. Be nice, be humble, work hard, and be willing to put in hours/do some bitch work.
Not at all sure this helps, but if nothing else just wanted let you know you're not alone.
