In need of a Mentor
Hi everyone,
I’ve been diving deep into research and networking to figure out how to break into investment banking. For some quick context—I’m a Marine Corps infantry veteran and an incoming student about to start my first semester at an Ivy League university (by God’s grace, truly).
I’m a hard worker and not afraid to put in the time, but I’ll admit—when it comes to navigating something completely new, it can take me a bit to find the right starting point. I’ve got the grit and the discipline; now I’m just trying to connect the dots.
I know this is a bit of a reach, but if you’ve made it this far and are willing to share some guidance or advice, I’d genuinely appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Military re-entry intern or full time programs are going to be your avenue in. linkedin search for those program alumni at the BBs for advice?
Thank you, will do!
Re-entry programs only work if you were an officer. There are some vet programs. That are not re-entry programs though.
Moelis- MVP
Lazard- LVAP
Evercore- has a diversity drop (highly suggest this one because the Evercore guys will actually work with you to see to it that you get better. Great group of vets there)
Really all these programs are great and vets across the street are really good. Get to a top school and start reaching out to vets and you’ll break in. My advice is make sure you are doing equal parts networking and prep. I did a lot of networking and not enough prep and I was prepping with shitty free guides. Don’t do that m, either find someone who has the right guides or buy them.
Lastly, join the school clubs for IB if you can. Sadly, I wasn’t able too due to it being competitive, however, I later found out they had all the questions that were asked at each bank. So by not getting in you are handicapping yourself. I can DM you if you’d like.
Love the grit and thank you for your service. Echo above comment that veterans affinity groups will be great resources for you, but happy to see how I can help. Will reach out via DM.
If you've served and are now going to an Ivy League, just trust the process and it'll work out. This might sound unhelpful but what I'm saying is you're clearly good at doing hard things which is all that matters.
Just gotta figure out where to start so I can start doing the “hard things.” Haha—thank you for the encouragement!
You can hit up every single vet alum at your school, and they will respond.
Check his guy's post out. I'm friends with the guy, he's always happy to help/chat. Feel free to PM
