Informal interview...HELP please

Today I received a response from one of the companies that I cold emailed. It is a boutique ib located in Canada called The Collins Group. Basically, the MD asked for a time where we can discuss. So, I am guessing it is sort of an informal interview.

Anyhow, to be honest it's my first ever ib interview and I come from an engineering background. So, im wondering if anyone can give me any valuable tips as to what I would need to know and how I could prepare to increase my chances. I really look forward to this opportunity so any help is appreciated!

Thanks

I don't have much to add to the conversation other than relax. Go in there with a good frame of mind and kick butt. It is how I got my current internship that will hopefully lead to a FT offer.

I was lucky I did not need too much technical knowledge/questions asked.

Good luck!

If you are interviewing with an MD he is going to be less likely to ask you a bunch of technical questions like what is enterprise value, what is a DCF etc. (certainly know the basics). At the end of the day a Managing director is looking for the following.

  1. A person he likes that he believes will absolutely stick out the 2-3 year stint
  2. Someone who seems to have a very positive attitude, the number one thing that will piss off a MD or Director is a negative attitude because they have been shoveling garbage for 10-15+ years and have paid their dues
  3. Someone who KNOWS the company. If it is a small firm that only does Medical, do NOT go in there asking if they have a technology industry group or an ECM department. For boutiques it is very key to know exactly what they do which leads to point 4...
  4. Have a strong reason for wanting to work at that particular bank. Find a way to spin your story such that it makes sense for you to switch to their specific bank. You said you're an engineer so if you have an engineering degree in chemical biology and they do nothing but Medical M&A... Boooom you found your pitch which is that you enjoy XYZ about chem/bio as it relates to medical but then realized you enjoyed learning about the companies that make the products rather than enjoying creating such products. "You realized you're more interested in learning about Medical Product Companies than you are about Creating Medical Products."
  5. Avoid bragging at all costs, this is a big one as well, if you come off as cocky/pompous you have no chance of beating him in an ego battle. At the end of the day he is an MD so his ego/experience/attitudes trump you. He earned it so play humble be positive and imply that you're willing to grind grind grind for what you want.
  6. Avoid cliche words "dedicated" "hard working" stick with showing these things. If you completed 17 triathlons that should be on there as a hobby so he knows you're a hard worker and bring it up as a hobby. If you want to imply you're smart put down some hobbies such as music (if you have them) as people associate that with higher cognitive abilities.

That about does it good luck WannaBeBanker. Hope you get the job.

Don't sound awkward on the phone. Srs. Be social and don't sound like you're reading a list of questions. Don't ask him anything you can just Google like "what is IB?".

If you have previous internship experience I would know exactly what you did, and what the firm you worked for did down pat. The last informational interview I had he wanted to know about the firm I last interned for and I wasn't expecting it, but thankfully I knew it pretty well.
