Intern Hours During Virtual Internship?
What should interns be expecting in terms of hours this summer if their bank is doing virtual? Assuming it's 6 weeks, the first two weeks would likely be training and introductions, leaving very little room for actual work. But have also heard of analysts and associates actually getting worked more now that meetings and calls can happen easier impromptu. Any full-time employees have an idea of what this could look like?

Very light. Can't see interns being staffed onto deals for only 4 weeks. Maybe a group project
I don't think anyone has a clue. I think the first 2-weeks will be how you laid it out, but the remaining 4 weeks will probably just be time for interns to see what the job is actually like tbh
I think you'll be expected to be kind of "on-call" for any one-off workstreams here and there from like 9am - 10pm at worst, but I would imagine a lot of sitting around doing nothing during the day. Maybe HR will throw together lots of virtual talks and individual groups will schedule 1-on-1 meetings for you to meet the team and all that
It will probably vary a ton if you're one of the "lucky" interns to actually get staffed on a live deal and if you're capable of getting caught up in a short period of time on how everything works
bumping this thread to see if anyone has anymore thoughts on what kind of hours will be required for this summer's virtual internship, especially for NYC.
SF EB, our interns are at this stage not going to be working on live deals. We do anticipate giving nearly all returns as this is somewhat of an unfair environment.

Great news that more banks are taking into consideration how much of a shitty playing field this is . If that's already their plan, why not make an announcement and soak up all the good PR like Citi and Moelis? Surely isn't difficult to get rid of one or two bad seeds if they perform poorly next year
Not sure why you got downvoted for asking a valid question
BB here, we're expecting our interns to be "on call" similar to us analysts, but in all likelihood you're gonna spend the majority of your time working on whatever the firm decides for your group project. Just focus on having a good attitude and volunteering for new projects. Ask an analyst to give you an old model to work through in your downtime
Incoming intern at a BB here. When you say "on call", am I supposed to have my computer open and be ready for when you need me to do some work from 9 am - 11 pm? Not trying to be rude or opposed to it since I know that's expected for an in-person internship, just not sure what you mean and I have no idea how it's going to play out this summer.
Yes. Between those hours, I would expect my intern to respond within 10-15 min of email. You'll also get email notifications on your phone as well so don't sweat it
Pretty much, yeah. It's not a ton to ask, especially since you'll have a smartphone with push email
Any insight on the ft offer rate?
Some of the Canadian banks/BB/EB Canadian offices started the summer internships earlier this month already (since in Canada the summer work term is usually from start of May to end of August). From my peers at different banks, it varies significantly - some are literally doing stupid orientation stuff like "let's draw a house together/schedule 2hrs for a yoga workout today" to kill time while some are getting grinded to 1/2am every day on live deals.
lazard spring week represent
'post your yoga selfies!!!'
Massive amount of pitch material as banks get desperate with deals drying up will keep interns pretty busy even from home. You don’t need live deals for long hours
BB Associate here. I would expect a vastly different experience for each intern.
Everyone will be staffed on teams and some teams will be busier than others.
As many have said, expectation will be that you are available until 10pm or so. Obviously some nights will be much later than that but you’ll have a sense for that. Available doesn’t mean you have to be starring at your screen, just generally responsive on email / phone (read / reply within 15/30 minutes) and ready to react accordingly (i.e., able to get to a computer relatively quickly if needed).
You’ll get a feel for it after a few days and if you’re in doubt, just ask your analyst or associate. They’re there to help.
how are interns staffed on teams in general? does each team pick their favourites during the interview process or is it mostly based on intern preferences?
Any idea how it would be different for s&t? Maybe you have a friend in markets at your bank ?
Am I screwed being a virtual intern on the west coast but "virtually" interning in NYC? Feel like I am at a disadvantage.
You'll just have to shift your sleep schedule by 3 hours
That sounds awful. Unfortunately you will have to shift your hours and wake up early. Some senior bankers and mid-level folks like to work early (9am) so just make sure you're awake
Welcome to actually working on the West Coast. You do get to go to bed super early and/or do night activities unencumbered by work (if the cutoff time is 10 PM ET, you're done by 7). Just make sure you are up and ready by 6 AM PT on a daily basis.
Just sleep from 10-6 (8 hours) and you get from 7-10 totally free. It's not a bad deal at all.
"just generally responsive on email / phone (read / reply within 15/30 minutes) and ready to react accordingly (i.e., able to get to a computer relatively quickly if needed)."
Should I get a separate phone and number for internship? This will allow me to make the phone ring exceptionally loud. I normally put phone on vibrate at night and I don't want to wake up for personal calls.
lmao bruh
Is it true that BofA London have typically had a mandatory finish time (10pm or 12am?) for interns? If so, do you think this will still be in effect for WFH?
Yes, was 10 and 12 pm 2 years ago and last year respectively. Current Off-cycle interns have a cap at 6pm. I would expect the same for SA.
Thanks for shedding light on this. I take it that you are currently a BofA London employee; do you have any idea as to what SAs this year will be expected to do? Will there be a chance to work on any live processes, or will most of the work likely be non-urgent research and individual/group project?
Thoughts on renting a single office if safe?
I thought about doing this as well. I am having second thoughts on it since I'm not sure how consistent or intense thee workflow will be over the summer. I don't want to be stuck in an office doing nothing with 65% of my time.
Waste of time and money. You want to be able to hop in bed/on Netflix if you have a free hour, not pacing around a crappy WeWork-lite.
Been an intern in these 3months in LDN.
What I've seen, sharing the experience with other interns is that there is much more unpredictability of workloads. Some days I was spending hours browsing all the news and working on the long term non urgent project and the whole team was also pretty chill, while some other days you got literally crushed with work from multiple people.
Be aware that it might be harder to let other analysts/associate know what you're working on, as they don't see you. So, don't be afraid to share what you're working on with the person that comes up with another request. (again, they don't see you + they might not know if there has been a follow up on other things you were previously working on).
What I'd suggest, as I really liked it, is to ask an analyst or associate if they have a long term side project you could work on. This would be good as you will be able to work on something useful during your downtimes and not be the "I'm not doing anything" guy. If something pops up, then you simply leave it aside, as it is not urgent.
Hour wise in my three months: 9am - 10pm most of the times, with some low times in between waiting for feedbacks. Worked some weekends and had few days working till 3/4/5am.
Hi, this is super helpful! I have a question about letting people know what you’re working on when given new tasks, how would you recommend going about it without it sounding like you are making excuses/showing negative attitude towards receiving more work? Do you just say something like: got it, btw just to let you know I am currently working on x for project y
In case something pops up and you're busy with some other works, just tell them you are fine doing it and ask them if it's fine if you start working after you finish XYZ for Analyst X etc.
If it's urgent etc, then you simply say that you'll talk with Analyst X asking if he/she is fine putting on hold his/her work for the time you need to do the urgent task and then revert to the task.
Worst case, if both say it's urgent, then just tell them to talk each other and let you know what's higher priority.
To make it short, I always use to reply: "Sure, perfect. Fine if I start in 2hrs or as soon as I'm done with Mark's task? If you need this ASAP then let me know and I'll speak with Mark."
