Interning across the world...or states

How many people travel large distances to intern or to get a job offer? I realize some people go for offers in other countries after graduating the U.S., but how many people will go to school on the East Coast and intern or look for a FT offer on the West? How many people try to intern/FT offer in Houston from Ivies or West? I'm just curious as I haven't seen many people talk about traveling larger distances for their internships and also is it important to get an internship in the location you want to end at?

Depends on the nature of your work. I interned at a private equity firm that specialized in emerging markets. We'd get US applicants that worked around the world (e.g. UK, Turkey, India, Brazil, etc.) I think location is not as important until you get to your junior year. If you do a SA stint in a city, prepare to work in that city FT. I think this matters more for US vs. non-US since going international seems like a tougher transition back to the US.

Depends also on what industries you want to cover. Example: If you're a Californian interested working in energy; be prepared to move to Houston. Moving around the US for internships/FT positions in finance is definitely not uncommon. Going abroad is a different story.

"Yes. Money has been a little bit tight lately, but at the end of my life, when I'm sitting on my yacht, am I gonna be thinking about how much money I have? No. I'm gonna be thinking about how many friends I have and my children and my comedy albums."

It's pretty common for people to intern in different cities than their UG? If you're trying to go to energy and you're in an Ivy or just outside of Texas than it would be common practice for your SA stints to move to Texas for a few months?

If you are committed to working in energy, yes. That seems (from what I'm reading) to be your goal so, if you are outside of Texas expect that to be where you end up (not to say there aren't opportunities in the Midwest and New York, just not as many). People move temporarily to New York, Chicago, SF, etc all the time for SA stints. Also, remember that it's always good to start your career in a city that is the "hub" of whatever industry you want to work in. Houston is the one of the big energy Meccas of the world; the network you would build there will really help your career.
