The United States gained independence from the British Empire in 1776, I don't think there are any advantages for gaining work permits for British citizens.

You would qualify for the J-visa, but check carefully which banks would even entertain the idea. J visa would typically go through a sponsoring agency, just like coaches, teachers, camp counselors, au-pairs, etc

US domestic employers normally prefer either USCs or students on CPT/OPT, these groups might be offered a return engagement.

Alternatively, look for local (UK based) US employers who might have a rotation scheme for internships (international internships) or get in touch with agencies directly.
