Is $8500 Rent in NYC too much for a Summer Analyst?

I’ll be working in NYC at BB and I ended up getting an apartment for $8500 total for the entire 10-week internship.

Is this too much? The way I thought about it was that the NYU dorms are $7500 for 9-weeks and my place is much better + I won’t have to share, but it’s kinda sounding like I paid too much. Thank you!

NYU dorms are like 5k. Yes, 8.5k is a lot relative to what others spend, but clearly, it was somewhat in your budget. What's done is done. It's only a summer. I hope the place is nice.

NYU dorms are 100% not in the $5k range for the entire 10 weeks. When I looked last summer, they were closer to $6.5k - $7k for singles with at least some amenities. $8.5k is expensive but this should give you an idea of how to budget your paychecks going forward.

Haha last summer I paid $4,365 ($1,940/mo) for 182 Broadway at Pace since I applied for a triple (had it all to myself due to lack of demand) and adjusted the start/end dates to only fit my 9wk internship. Incredibly low price with an added bonus of being within walking distance to the office.

I might've abused the system too much as I believe they removed the application to adjust your start/end dates this year.

All the people saying save money or whatever, like I get it, i really do. But I spent extra to have my own place and it was 1000% worth it. I was in a sweaty group and had to do a lot of work on weekends and having a nice desk setup at home made my life a lot easier. Something to keep in mind.

I have zero regrets over the few thousand dollars I had to spend extra so that I could do my best work, most comfortably, and secure a return offer that will offset any lost money lol.

What is it with rent in NYC? In London a nice apartment goes for like 1.4-2k pcm. At least it did last time we rented back in 2019 (1.6k then).

It can always be worse, my rent is 4000 a month as an analyst 1. My number one luxury / concern is my living situation, so I prioritized that. It will be fine as long as you don't overspend on other areas - like clothes, watches, etc.

4k a month lmfao Rental situations are bad in NYC but not thaaat bad. For a decent studio you'll pay 2000-3200 a month and for 1 bedroom 3-3500. Again this varies by location but you don't need to live in West Village when in NYC. Upper East, Upper West, Hells Kitchen, Battery Park, you can get the prices I mentioned above.

Paid almost 10k for 10 weeks in SF last year. Own space at the end of a long day is worth every penny, IMO. Have had negative roommate experiences in the past and not having to deal with another person in my space after work was huge.

Honestly the place is really nice, it’s in East Village and I won’t be living along, but will be staying with two other friends of my from high school who will be interning in the same group and firm, so the support system will be good
