Is it too late to find anything?
I'm at the point where all of my contacts and everyone I've talked to has said its too late and they have already helped other people out. Is it really too late to do anything? At what point (June? August?) do I just give up? Are MMs and/or boutiques still looking for interns?
I'm a third year, and I'm really open to anything. Across the spectrum I've just found people saying I'm too late.
Does your school have an externship program? You should contact your career center and use your official alumni network. Many of them in high finance will let you shadow or intern for a few days up to what could be a month, and you can put this on your resume and use it for the FT recruiting season (that's what I did and I got a BB offer). Good luck!
Boutiques are still looking. I sent my resume to one a few months ago, and their MD (finally) replied to me the other day asking for me to come in for an interview. I suggest to start calling and e-mailing.
This. Pretty much any smaller boutique firm in any number of spaces within finance will still be recruiting. It's the big firms that have more formal programs that get their hiring out of the way in the Fall. Talked to an HF the other day saying that they were actually early in their process so it's worth a shot. The trick is actually finding the ones that are hiring. (Think Tiger Cubs)
And the next person you get in touch with might surprise you. I think you still have 3 weeks to get this done.
I do not think it is every too late if you offer free services.
It's never too late.
Keep plugging away. Is everything solid in terms of your resume/CV? You can try cold calling boutiques/HFs w/o alumni connections in hopes that you can work unpaid. Your persistence will pay off eventually.
Offer to work for free if you have family support.
Best of luck.
Look up the list of boutiques of the city you're targeting, pick up the phone and start inquiring about internships. A lot of the small places are just starting to look. All the brand-name banks will be taken but there's much more out there. Remember to follow up always and hustle hard. There's no reason why you shouldn't get interviews.
I got an interview for a SA gig with a decent MM (it's paid!) last week even though they were far in the process. If you show the drive, people will give you a chance.
Good luck.
P.S: If anyone has leads on Chicago based SA openings, please pm me.
not too late, at usc we have recent posting from some MM and boutique banks looking for interns...do your research to see local banks and cold email and cold call...dont give up!
i didn't get my offer until the first week of may.. keep hustlin
It's not too late. Contact local MMs and boutiques and offer to work for experience. I've been doing this for the past few weeks and have had a few call backs for interviews. Best of luck
I know a girl who got her FT offer from a MM bank in June (2010, I think).... after she graduated jobless. She is still working at the MM in Chicago.
I'm in the same boat as you op, literally cold emailed over 200 places and 95% no response and the 5% that did weren't looking or were already done. My resume and cover letter are solid according to my school career center and an analyst at a mm, but it's most likely my gpa that's holding me back (3.4), can't do anything about that at this point other than to keep emailing and hoping for the best.....
Follow up with a call after every email. It's huge.
Reach out harder to alumni depending on your school.
I screwed up recruiting season and now I have a couple interviews lined up for my summer because of the power of the call.
I doubt a 3.4 gpa is holding you back from applying to 200+ places. There is probably some other weakness in your application...I know people with well below a 3.4 getting jobs in IBD. As it is "relatively" late in the process, have you considered applying to positions outside of IBD that you can leverage into next year for the FT process? Assuming you are an undergrad looking for an internship, any experience is better than none for SA when you're looking to get into FT hiring.
USC just had a few more boutiques (not elite tho, like regional ones) post new summer analyst postings.
USC is a semi-target (lets not argue here, not point of the thread :) ) and they still have boutiques posting, shows that there are definitely spots available in west coast/LA at least...
good luck
No matter what anyone says to you, please remember, "It's never too late."
When it's this late, should I include my resume with my cold email?
Not at all! Most of our clients are still hiring, actually. You can check us out on the WSO Job Board, but really it's always worth hitting up all smaller buy-side firms. They tend to have pretty ad-hoc internship process, so get on the phones!
It is not to late for a lot of boutique banks. I just had a first round phone interview last week, yesterday they asked me to come in for a second round interview (this is for SA position). Also, I have a 3.3GPA and from extreme non-target school.
I sent out over 200 cold emails and then followed up with phone calls. I had an interview yesterday at a boutique in NYC. Have a few more interviews lined up for the coming weeks. Best advice I can give is be persistent, don't let the low response rate or anything get to you, I am always thinking that "the next email I send out is going to be the offer".
Good luck!
Sent you a PM.
