Is Leerink Turning Into EB?
Does SVB Leerink have the potential to turn into an EB? The senior hiring they have been doing as of late is super impressive. Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on the bank's outlook.

On the come up for sure with UBS HC and Citi HC team being cleared out
Why do you think so many people are willing to leave these places?
Money
UBS tech.. the hc hires were from citi baml gugg gs Baird
and lev fin from HSBC and structured finance from MTS. think there were some more too maybe?
Considering it's a meaningless term used strictly on WSO, sure. This is the wrong question to be asking. It's a good platform with quality professionals working on interesting deals. What it's called on WSO hardly matters.
It’s not even a boutique. It’s owned by a bank.
I think they still try to operate as a boutique from what they've told me
Didnt throw MS. Leerink brothers are still running the shop, and although SVB owns us now, building out our TMT banking will be made possible with SVB's strong ties in the valley. We're still one of the best biopharma banks for research and capital markets
Do most come from a science background or do you hire from all backgrounds?
Any idea if Leerink increased pay in line with other banks?
I've been interning here so I hope so. i will say the deals I've been on have been really cool and services is seeing some big stuff and the people are really great.
I will echo what another poster said tho. I chose it before all this because even if it isnt an EB it's an awesome platform in the life sciences which is a fascinating place to be imo.
Are you able to PM me? Accepted a SA22 offer and would like to hear about your experience so far
Question for you: I had previously read that Leerink had a strangely arduous interview process. Was that the case for you, or would you say it was straightforward / what you expected, of course with the added healthcare dimension to it too.
technical for sure
Seems to be a lot of Cain Bros and Torreya guys giving you MS. Leerink's growth is definitely impressive, but I'm not quite sure what really constitutes an EB. Will Leerink be successfully competing for $10+ billion M&A deals? I have no clue. But the growth of their firm is certainly impressive, and I'd imagine it's a top place to be for future PE/GE/VC recruiting, particularly with respect to life sciences. Will it be the Qatalyst of HC? That's a tough hurdle to hop over, but Leerink is definitely a great place to be if you want to focus on healthcare. Certainly a top-end shop.
thanks for the write up honestly dont think well be doing a ton of 10B+ but within a week on the job I'm seeing Billy deals come thru. if ur right about the VC shit I'm ecstatic cool place to be. was also wondering if we would be able to get looks from SVB capital since its technically internal
Qatalyst of HC is already CVP to be for real. I'd imagine Leerink may give it a good run one day or at least dominate the MM market (which is huge in healthcare, not many billion dollar deals out there). The thing is Jefferies already does this for many years so I'm not really sure how Leerink will look in the future
Does Cain have any growth potential beyond where its deals are currently? Recruited for both and took Cain right before all this extra stuff happened haha...
How does MTS stack up against Cain / Leerink / Torreya?
Small firm that is strong in biotech/pharma/HCIT. 2019 was a record year for them (multiple billion dollar deals). 2020 was a strong HCIT year. 2021 seems to indicate a strong push towards HCIT.
In SMIDcap life sci they are great but as of now they aren't getting the big fee merger or licensing fees with life sciences companies for the larger deals generally. They get into the joint bookrun deals to the right of GS/MS/Cowen for therapeutics IPOs / Follow-Ons but will rarely get the lead-left roles. Point being they have a great presence in strictly life sciences (ignoring their new Tech hires) but were never really getting M&A advisory or leader roles on capital markets deals. I think they will get there as they have established relationships with companies early on which may well hire them in the future for banking mandates with lead roles but let's see
I think they'll see an increase in M&A through healthcare services. Their Gugg hires seem to have been a strong tandem with a track record of billion dollar buyouts at boutique firms (Robert Minear and Barry Blake).
No
care to elaborate?
snagged some jeffries folks recently to build on healthcare
Leerink is a good firm, but it's not EB. It's a PJ Solomon tier bank.
I think SVB Leerink is a couple notches above. At least if we're talking healthcare
Any update on the UBS TMT guys coming over?
